Veteran wide receiver Tim Patrick heralded as exact presence Jets needed

Entering the 2026 offseason, one of the New York Jets' biggest needs was at wide receiver. They let John Metchie walk in restricted free agency, and were incredibly thin at the position.

Outside of Garrett Wilson and Adonai Mitchell, the Jets had special teams ace Isaiah Williams and underwhelming 2025 fourth-round pick Arian Smith. It wasn't exactly the most promising room in the league.

Darren Mougey declined to add any pass catchers in free agency, but then came the 2026 NFL Draft. At the back end of the first round, he traded up to land Indiana wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr. with the 30th overall pick, adding a talented young wideout to complement Wilson and Mitchell.

The Jets GM wasn't done yet, though, and made another addition just a few weeks after the draft, signing veteran Tim Patrick on a one-year deal. Patrick rounds out the relatively young wide receiver room, and he projects to add a valuable presence on this iteration of the Green & White.

Tim Patrick will be a 'consumate pro' for this Jets team

Former NFL veteran and current CBS analyst Leger Douzable sat down with Eric Allen on The Official Jets Podcast to discuss the Patrick signing, and Douzable couldn't speak any higher praise for the veteran wide receiver.

"Consummate pro. We saw what he did for that veteran presence in the locker room in Jacksonville last year with some of those young receivers, Parker Washington, and even BTJ (Brian Thomas Jr.). Tim Patrick is that guy that you just bring in because he has a dog mentality, he's going to get after you blocking, and he's going to be that voice that younger guys listen to because he does it the right way."

While the Jets' wide receiver room is talented, there's a lot of inexperience in the group outside of Garrett Wilson. Patrick should be an invaluable presence in Florham Park, taking guys like Mitchell, Cooper, and Smith under his wing.

Patrick isn't the biggest producer at this stage in his career. He's only had 48 receptions and 581 yards over the last two seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Detroit Lions.

But he's seen it all throughout his eight-year NFL career and should be able to teach the young guys a thing or two.

Patrick has managed to haul in six touchdowns over the last two years, though, and along with being a mentor for this young Jets team, the 32-year-old may also be able to chip in a few big plays every now and then.
