It was a very active first round on Thursday night for Darren Mougey, Aaron Glenn, and the New York Jets. After months of debate, the Jets elected to go with David Bailey second overall over Arvell Reese before taking Kenyon Sadiq 16th overall.
That wasn't all, though. Since taking over last January, Mougey has shown a willingness to work the trade market, and he did exactly that late Thursday night. After Bailey and Sadiq, the Jets moved back into the first round, where they selected wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr., 30th overall.
It was a strong finish to night one for the Jets, as the expectation going into the draft was that New York would walk away with a receiver in round one. Not only does Cooper provide that, but Sadiq comes in as an intriguing high-end pass-catching tight end prospect.
In his first full day as a New York Jet, Cooper made his thoughts clear when asked about what he likes in Garrett Wilson's game. The Indiana product said he liked "everything" about Wilson's game, whom he will now be playing alongside.
Omar Cooper Jr. has high praise for new Jets teammate Garrett Wilson
There was no denying the Jets' massive need at wide receiver heading into the 2026 NFL Draft. In a year where Garrett Wilson only played eight games in 2025, the 25-year-old still finished with a team high of 395 receiving yards, while his 36 receptions led all Jets wide receivers.
That tells you all you need to know about the state of affairs in New York's receiving room last season, which was certainly impacted by the poor quarterback play. Entering 2026, though, the room is starting to take shape.
Wilson slotting in as the no doubt number one receiver since being selected in the 2022 NFL Draft can look around with help next to him. After being traded at the deadline as part of the Sauce Gardner trade with the Colts, Adonai Mitchell showed flashes in his eight games with New York.
Now with the addition of Cooper, the Jets can roll out a tandem of Wilson, Mitchell, and Cooper, which is a vast improvement over what was on the field last year, specifically going into the season.
Add Kenyon Sadiq to the mix on top of Breece Hall and Mason Taylor entering year two, and the Jets, at the very least on paper, have put together an offense around Geno Smith that provides some intrigue.
The combination of size, speed, and physicality is also very evident in this offense as the Jets enter year two under this regime. Simply put, these upgrades are much needed for an offense that needed an infusion of playmakers and pass catchers.
Cooper is clearly excited to play alongside Garrett Wilson, and Wilson himself shared that same sentiment about all three of the Jets' first-round picks. The next step is for Cooper to take his success in college and translate it to the NFL, playing next to the Jets' star wideout in Wilson.
