The New York Jets spent most of the last 12 months trying to add more pass catchers around whoever is under center, which was emphasized when they brought in a first-round tight end and wide receiver in the 2026 NFL Draft. Still, the team could have used a veteran like Tim Patrick to steady the ship.

Patrick, who recorded 15 catches and three touchdowns for a Jacksonville Jaguars team that won 13 games and an AFC South title, has found his next employer in New York. Rich Cimini is reporting that the former Denver Broncos and Detroit Lions receiver will ink a one-year contract.

Patrick will give the Jets yet another veteran player in a very young wide receiver room. Patrick is not a star, but he's someone who can provide competent play while boosting the young guns in the locker room.

Jets sign veteran wide receiver Tim Patrick

Patrick has connections to both Aaron Glenn and Darren Mougey. He knows the former after suiting up in Detroit while he worked his way back from injuries and the latter from Denver, where he got his start in the pros. Patrick has some juice left in the tank, which could appeal to a Jets team that needs wide receiver depth.

At 6-5, Patrick has been able to use his size and verticality to remain a viable pass-catching target despite his age and missing two straight seasons due to injuries that sapped some of his speed. Per Cimini, Patrick has long been regarded as a great presence in the locker room.

Patrick will likely slot in as the No. 4 wide receiver on the current Jets depth chart. Garrett Wilson is locked in as the No. 1 option, and the Jets will likely see first-round rookie Omar Cooper Jr. try to dislodge Adonai Mitchell in the pecking order. Isaiah Williams will likely have a spot secured due to his excellence as a returner.

The Patrick signing could be bad news for Arian Smith and Irv Charles. If the Jets are unconvinced by Charles offering nothing beyond special teams value, or if Smith is unable to pick up the slack on special teams after a disappointing rookie season, either one of these players could end up getting cut.

Patrick will give the Jets some veteran insurance in case something happens to one of the players above them on the depth chart. For the first time in what feels like forever, the Jets have a wide receiver room other teams will look at enviously.
