The New York Jets made their first veteran wide receiver addition of the offseason on Wednesday night, adding former Detroit Lions wide receiver Tim Patrick to a one-year deal.
Unfortunately, that meant a corresponding move was necessary, and the New York Post's Brian Costello reported that the Jets parted ways with kicker Will Ferrin, whom New York signed shortly after the 2026 NFL Draft as an undrafted free agent.
Ferrin was one of three kickers the Jets expected to bring into the summer as their main competition at kicker. The BYU product had promise, making 58 of 71 collegiate field goal attempts.
Instead, the Jets will head into camp with veteran Cade York and international prospect Lenny Krieg as their two primary options.
Jets cut K Will Ferrin to make room for WR Tim Patrick
You'll be hard-pressed to find a Jets fan who will be disappointed in the roster moves, unless they're either a BYU or Ferrin fan, but it was necessary.
Patrick was a much-needed addition. After adding Omar Cooper Jr. in the 2026 NFL Draft, the Jets created a solid trio of pass catchers for Geno Smith to work with in Garrett Wilson, Adonai Mitchell, and Cooper. They were lacking in the depth department, though.
After those top three wide receivers, New York didn't have much depth. Special teams ace Isaiah Williams is just that, and 2025 fourth-round pick Arian Smith can't be counted on as WR4. Patrick made perfect sense as a veteran option.
Now, all eyes turn to the kicking competition, with the Jets looking to continue the consistency they got from Nick Folk last season.
Between Krieg and York, York has the most experience kicking in the NFL, despite it not being the most impressive.
The former fourth-round pick by the Cleveland Browns kicked for two seasons in the NFL, making 33 of 45 field goal attempts over 23 games. he didn't kick in 2025, but split time with both the Washington Commanders and Cincinnati Bengals in 2024.
Krieg, an international player, may have the most upside. He's never kicked in a regular-season game, but as a former soccer player, he has a booming leg.
It's not out of the realm of possibility that the Jets add a third kicker to the competition at some point this summer.
