The New York Jets are perpetually in search of quarterbacks. Yes, they have their veteran starter in Geno Smith, acquired via trade at the start of free agency, but New York needs an experienced backup behind him in case of injury.
Going into the season with Bailey Zappe, Brady Cook, or a Day 3 rookie quarterback behind Smith would be a disaster and would immediately tank the Jets' season if their starter goes down with injury.
Multiple options have already come off the free agent board for the Jets, including former quarterback Joe Flacco, who re-signed with the Cincinnati Bengals on Tuesday. Carson Wentz was a rumored option at the start of the offseason, but he decided he would rather return to the Minnesota Vikings than come play for his former coach, Frank Reich.
At this point, the Jets' options are getting limited, and it may force them to turn to a familiar face who was on the team last season.
Jets may have no choice but to re-sign Tyrod Taylor
Tyrod Taylor, who has spent the last two seasons as the backup in New York, is still unsigned and may be the Jets' best option as insurance behind Smith.
In minimal action with the Jets, Taylor has been solid. The Virginia Tech product has completed 62.2% of his passes for 898 passing yards and tossed eight touchdowns to five interceptions in eight appearances.
His biggest issue is durability. Taylor has a knack for getting injured, and even just this past season, lost the starting gig because he got banged up in a Week 14 game against the Miami Dolphins. He may have even been starting earlier in the season had it not been for a knee injury that forced the team to keep Justin Fields in the lineup.
Either way, the Jets are running out of options, and the only other name that has been mentioned as another veteran backup is former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Cooper Rush. He was cut by the Baltimore Ravens and is looking for a new home.
Rush didn't look great in two starts last season, throwing four interceptions and no touchdowns. Between him and Taylor, there's clearly a better choice. At least Taylor already has the respect and trust within the Jets locker room.
