The New York Jets are one of many teams that decided to sign veteran quarterback Tyrod Taylor and his unique blend of playmaking and efficiency. Throughout his career, the former sixth-round pick has been able to continue earning paychecks thanks to his chameleon-like ability to blend into so many different offensive schemes.
In an exclusive interview with FanSided on behalf of Dairy Queen, Taylor let the world in on some of the secrets that have helped him last longer than most backup quarterbacks in the league. To hear Taylor tell it, going from one team to another may not be as big a lift as some make it seem.
"Football hasn't changed from a schematic standpoint," Taylor said, "How to get guys open and how to attack defenses, it just looks different in different systems...being part of multiple systems, you can get a hold of a new system fairly easily, it's just about learning the verbiage."
Jets QB Tyrod Taylor explains how he lasted so long as a backup quarterback
Taylor has played for seven teams in his 15-year career. Not only has he very rarely had one spot to call home, but often times teams that bring him back for a second season are changing coaches. Once again, Taylor needed to learn a new playbook.
Despite all of those obstacles, Taylor's quality processing brain and his propensity for still being able to ad-lib out of structure have helped him land job after job. Taylor was still miles away the best passer of the three quarterbacks New York trotted out last season.
It remains to be seen if Taylor will return for a third season in New York, as he likely is eyeing a chance to contribute to a champion, but the Jets should at least see if he is open to coming back. If they add a young quarterback, it's hard to find a better veteran mentor.
Taylor's career should be a message to all other NFL quarterbacks out there. If you can quickly pick up a playbook and avoid turnovers, teams will be willing to hand you backup quarterback jobs well into your late 30s due to how valuable that skillset is.
