The New York Jets have their starting quarterback. Geno Smith is back home in New York, and barring a disaster, will be under center in Week 1 of 2026.
As for Smith's backup, the picture isn't so clear. Prior to the legal tampering period, there were rumblings that Carson Wentz was new offensive coordinator Frank Reich's ideal target as a free agent. The two have ties dating back to their days with the Philadelphia Eagles and Indianapolis Colts.
But it's not a sure thing that the former No. 2 overall pick will be the Jets' backup quarterback, and the recent reporting surrounding Wentz suggests New York may need to look elsewhere for insurance behind Smith.
Latest Carson Wentz report suggests he's unlikely to sign with Jets
The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt provided an update on Wednesday afternoon on the Jets' current hunt for a backup quarterback, and it gave a clearer picture of whether or not Wentz was coming.
"They're still exploring their options. They had interest in Carson Wentz but he's unlikely to be signing with the Jets as of now, according to multiple sources. Things can still change — but that's where it stands."Zack Rosenblatt
As things stand, it seems that New York is going to have to continue monitoring the veteran quarterback market for a Plan B behind Smith. Perhaps the Reich-Wentz connection isn't enough of a draw as some thought it was.
SNY's Connor Hughes followed up on Rosenblatt's reporting that Wentz "has options" outside of the Jets, likely more appetizing opportunities where he could have a shot to compete to be a starting quarterback. Obviously, Smith is a lock to be New York's Week 1 starter.
Tyrod Taylor could be in line for a return to the Jets. He's well-liked and well-respected within the locker room and is certainly no threat to usurp Smith. But it's possible Taylor's lengthy injury history could turn New York off. What good is a backup quarterback if he can't be trusted to stay healthy when thrust into the starting role?
Of course, Bailey Zappe, whom the Jets signed to a futures contract just after the 2025 season ended, could compete for the backup job. He doesn't have as much experience as some other free agent options, but he still has a handful of career starts under his belt.
Regardless, Jets fans who were worried about Wentz being the primary insurance behind their starting quarterback can relax, knowing he just doesn't seem all that interested in bringing his talents to New York. Still, expect another addition to the QB room at some point over the next few weeks.
