Beggars can't be choosers, I guess.

With just days until the legal tampering period opens, the rumor mill is in full swing surrounding the New York Jets and their quarterback vacancy.

Whether it's the recently released Kyler Murray, grizzled veterans like Jacoby Brissett and Kirk Cousins, or unproven backups in Tanner McKee and Jarrett Stidham, Jets fans have probably heard just about every name linked to their favorite team at some point.

But as we get closer to the start of free agency, the smoke is starting to blow in certain directions, and SNY's Connor Hughes reported the name of the quarterback who is allegedly offensive coordinator Frank Reich's top option.

Frank Reich's preferred Jets quarterback is... Carson Wentz?

Hughes reported that Reich's preference would be to reunite with Carson Wentz, a quarterback he's worked with at two other stops in his career, the Philadelphia Eagles and Indianapolis Colts.

"Wentz, two sources told SNY, is believed to be Reich’s preferred option. The two have a longstanding relationship dating back to Reich’s time as Wentz’s offensive coordinator in Philadelphia from 2016-17. Wentz’s best season came under Reich in Year 2, when he went 11-2 and threw for 3,296 yards with 33 touchdowns and seven interceptions."

Wentz's best play has always come under the guidance of Reich; that much is clear. He was the MVP favorite in 2017 before going down with a torn ACL, and still ended up a Pro Bowler and second-team All-Pro.

Even his second stint under Reich in Indianapolis was solid. Wentz completed 62.4% of his passes for 3,563 yards, to go along with 27 touchdowns and seven interceptions. The Colts finished only 9-8, and Wentz ended up getting unceremoniously cut after the season, but it seems that didn't put a strain on the relationship between quarterback and coach.

"There was a belief the relationship between the two soured during that season, with the Colts deciding to move on from him after the year. Two sources confirmed the resentment was not between coach and quarterback, but between the player and upper management/ownership."

Hughes also notes that the former No. 2 overall pick will have other suitors after going 2-3 as the Minnesota Vikings backup last season, and the Jets won't be the only team vying for his services.

If Wentz gets snatched up, the other names mentioned by SNY are Jacoby Brissett and former Jets quarterback Geno Smith. Both veterans are a lot more appetizing than what Wentz brings to the table as a possible starter.
