Among all the options at quarterback for the New York Jets heading into 2026, there's no clear-cut perfect choice.
There's a wide variety of unproven players, such as career backups Malik Willis, Tanner McKee, and Jarett Stidham. Veterans who are looking to start a new chapter of their career, like Kyler Murray and Tua Tagovailoa. All have their pros, but certainly carry some cons as well.
The most likely options of the bunch are veteran quarterbacks who are a bit past their prime. Players like Kirk Cousins, Jacoby Brissett, and Derek Carr could provide the Jets with league-average play, but not threaten to usurp a youngster whom New York is destined to bring in at some point over the next two years.
Several of those vets would have to be acquired in a trade, and one in particular with past ties to offensive coordinator Frank Reich could be the perfect choice, thanks to his above-average play and low asking price.
Jets can land former Frank Reich QB Jacoby Brissett for a Day 3 pick
According to CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones, the Arizona Cardinals are willing to trade veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett for a "decent" Day 3 draft pick. The Jets, with all their capital, could be in a prime position to land the gunslinger.
Brissett and Reich's relationship dates back to their days with the Indianapolis Colts. With Andrew Luck set to miss the 2017 season, the Colts sent wide receiver Phillip Dorsett to the New England Patriots in exchange for Brissett.
The former third-round pick played four seasons under Reich, completing 59.5% of his passes for 6,059 yards to go along with 31 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. In 30 starts, Brissett was 11-19.
Reich's offense has certainly changed since those early days in Indianapolis, but with 10 NFL seasons under his belt, there's no doubt Brissett could come in and run the Jets offense to a competent level.
Despite it not leading to many wins, Brissett was a productive starter for the Cardinals in the wake of Murray's injury this past season. In 14 games, the veteran threw for 3,366 yards, 23 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. New York would kill for that level of play under center.
At age 33, Brissett isn't going to be your long-term starter. But he could be the perfect stopgap that keeps the Jets competitive in 2026 that saves Aaron Glenn and Darren Mougey's jobs.
Among the options available this offseason, Brissett could be the lifeline the Jets are looking for until they draft a young quarterback, and if all goes well, he could even stay on as the mentor for that future draft pick.
