NY Jets miss out on one of the top free-agent QB options
By Justin Fried
The NY Jets need to make a quarterback change following another disastrous performance from Zach Wilson and the offense in Week 3. It doesn't appear as though Matt Ryan will be that change, however.
The former-NFL-quarterback-turned-CBS-broadcaster recently discussed rumors that his reps had reached out to the Jets about the possibility of an NFL return this season, and he made it clear that he has no interest.
"No, not on my end. But, to clear it up, my agent is one of the best at what he does — Todd France is incredible. And he wouldn’t be doing his job if he wasn’t looking into certain situations."
- Matt Ryan
Ryan essentially confirmed that his agent reached out to the Jets, but he also reiterated that he's not actually interested in signing with the team. That's some conflicting information, but regardless, it doesn't seem like the Jets are interested, either.
The Athletic's Dianna Russini reported last week that the Jets were not interested in signing Ryan or a host of other veteran quarterbacks, including Carson Wentz, Joe Flacco, and Nick Foles. Perhaps that mindset has changed after Week 3.
Either way, Ryan seems content in retirement and insists he has no interest in joining the Jets.
Cross Matt Ryan off the list of NY Jets quarterback options
Despite the Jets' desire to stick with Zach Wilson, it's become increasingly apparent that a change must be made. Wilson's struggles directly led to the team's loss to the New England Patriots in Week 3. He's downright unplayable at this stage.
Wilson has completed just 52 percent of his passes through three games, throwing two touchdowns and four interceptions. He's averaging just 5.6 yards per attempt, 155.7 yards per game, and has a lowly 27.0 QBR — all of which are career lows.
At the very least, the Jets need a quarterback who can competently run the team's offense. Wilson isn't that player right now, and it's hard to imagine he ever will be. He's not an NFL-caliber (starter or backup) quarterback at this stage.
The Jets have been connected to a pair of veteran quarterbacks, most notably Colt McCoy, in recent weeks. McCoy still seems like the most likely addition for the team at this time.
As for Ryan, the Jets might be better off looking elsewhere anyway. The four-time Pro Bowler finished with 14 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 12 games with the Indianapolis Colts last season. His lack of mobility might also be an issue behind a shaky Jets offensive line.
The Jets will continue their search for a new quarterback addition. Cross Matt Ryan off the list.
