Boomer Esiason reveals expected date for NY Jets-Davante Adams trade

When could the Jets trade for Davante Adams? We might have our answer...

Another day, another unfounded rumor about the NY Jets possibly trading for Davante Adams. The Jets have been connected to Adams trade rumors dating back over a year at this point, but in recent days, those rumors have begun to pick up steam again.

From Aaron Rodgers' continued recruitment of his former teammate to comments made by both Adams and Rodgers, the idea of a former Packers reunion in Florham Park has become one of the biggest talking points of the summer for the Jets.

WFAN's Boomer Esiason further fueled those rumors with a supposed report of his own on Monday. The former NFL quarterback insists that if an Adams trade does happen, and he seems to believe there's a good chance it will, he knows when the expected target date is.

Esiason is reporting that an Adams trade would likely take place either in late August or early September just before the start of the 2024 season. That's soon ā€” very soon.

"The dead cap for the Raiders this year is $40 million [if they traded Adams]. Iā€™m hearing that this is going to happen - if it does happen - in late August or early September. And the cap hit for him is $25 million."

NY Jets fans shouldn't get excited about latest Davante Adams trade report

Of course, we need to address the proverbial elephant in the room here. This is a Boomer Esiason report. The former Jets QB doesn't exactly have a stellar track record of accurate reporting.

This is the same individual who reported that Ben Johnson was a "lock" to become the Washington Commanders' head coach just a few months ago. It's also the same individual who was 100 percent positive that the same organization would be renamed the "Washington Admirals" a few years back.

Esiason has also previously reported that the Jets planned to release Mekhi Becton before the 2022 season amongst many other inaccurate "reports." His track record is spotty at absolute best.

That's why it's difficult to trust his latest rumors. While an Adams trade remains a pipedream for the Jets, it's hard to imagine any deal would get done before the start of the season, both for logistical and financial reasons.

If the Las Vegas Raiders were going to trade Adams in the offseason, it likely would have already happened by now. The Jets reportedly reached out about an Adams trade before the deadline last year and were denied.

Raiders general manager Tom Telesco recently confirmed to reporters that the team has no intention of trading Adams before the start of the season. Doing so would cause the Raiders to take on a large sum of dead cap, and it's hard to imagine they'd get equal value in return.

If the Jets are going to trade for Adams at any point, it seems much more likely to happen at the deadline (if the Raiders are out of contention) or in the offseason. A pre-Week 1 trade just doesn't make much sense.

The Davante Adams rumors continue to swirl, but Jets fans probably shouldn't put too much stock into this one.
