The New York Jets have some questions to answer about their long-term future after falling to 2-5 this year. That loss opened the floodgates for some tough conversations around head coach Aaron Glenn.
With his future with the team in question, it appears that general manager Darren Mougey is on good footing. In addition to ESPN's Rich Cimini believing Mougey will be around next year, the play of rookie receiver Omar Cooper Jr. works in his favor.
Cooper Jr. has been active for three total games, but his impact has been felt instantly for this team. And his production is going to be considered a win for Mougey.
Omar Cooper Jr.'s fast start could help Darren Mougey keep his job
Cooper is the first player in NFL history to log more than 100-plus receiving yards and a receiving touchdown in consecutive games within his first three games. He's now up to 248 receiving yards on 12 catches with two touchdowns. His receiving yards are the most by any Jet player in his first three games since the merger.
The former Indiana standout is quickly putting to rest any doubts around him. Leading up to the season, there were overreactions around him, but when the game kicks off, Cooper has shown that he will be a serious playmaker.
In the opener against the Titans, Cooper had a 30-yard reception, where he broke multiple tackles in the process. He then landed on injured reserve due to a high-ankle sprain, but as soon as he returned, he's been a difference-maker.
The Jets have been searching for a WR2 who could be a serious factor across from Garrett Wilson, and they seem to have found that with Cooper.
And since Mougey is the general manager for this team, he will get praise for the selection. The Jets decided to trade up to snag Cooper with the 30th overall pick. It was a priority to add some juice to this offense, and he's proving them right.
Darren Mougey may have drafted his way toward a longer Jets tenure
While the team still needs to close out games to win, there's clearly talent on this roster. Cooper, in addition to David Bailey, Kenyon Sadiq, and Darrell Jackson Jr., has played well at times this season.
Cooper's past two weeks have been sensational, and that's a win for Mougey. If the Jets decide to move on from Aaron Glenn as head coach, Mougey can go to Woody Johnson and tell him that this team has a lot of talent. And if Cooper keeps it up, there's no way to deny it.
The better the rookies perform, the more ammo Mougey will have. Yes, it's early, but what Cooper has done is extremely impressive. It isn't anything to scoff at, and you have to tip your cap to Mougey. It's something that will help his job security in the coming months, which is important, as there could be some sweeping changes coming to Florham Park.
