The New York Jets have a big game against the Miami Dolphins in Week 7 and are looking to improve to 3-4 on the year. That's the focus of everyone in the building, but a major talking point around this team is the job status of head coach Aaron Glenn and GM Darren Mougey.

The fanbase is split on how they view these guys, but ESPN's Rich Cimini dropped an interesting nugget on Mougey. On the Jets Collective podcast, Cimini revealed that, as things currently stand, he thinks Mougey will be back for the 2027 season.

"[Mougey] solid right now. I mean, I think he is well regarded & I mean there's no Chris Ballard situation here. I mean, nothing is going to happen to Mougey. I think he will be around next year," Cimini said.

While Cimini is providing his opinion on the situation, it's noteworthy, as he's one of the most plugged-in reporters for the Jets. Of course, this isn't definite and could change; this shouldn't be overlooked.

It sounds like New York Jets GM Darren Mougey's job is safe

There are still 11 games left in the regular season, so things can certainly change, but the fact that Cimini is already stating this in October gives a good indication of how Mougey is viewed inside the building by ownership.

Mougey's tenure with the Jets has been up and down, to be fair. He has done some good things on the first two days of the NFL Draft. Over the last two years, he's added some exciting young players like Armand Membou, Mason Taylor, Azareye'h Thomas, David Bailey, Kenyon Sadiq, and Omar Cooper Jr.

His biggest flex was getting two first-round picks and Adonai Mitchell in exchange for Sauce Gardner. Getting that return for a cornerback was a masterclass, and with how the Colts' season appears to be heading down the drain, they could end up with a top-10 pick from Indy.

He's also done a solid job adding guys like Minkah Fitzpatrick, Jowon Briggs, and Harrison Phillips on the trade market for low-cost deals that helped raise the floor at positions of need. He certainly deserves praise for all these additions, but he hasn't been perfect.

Darren Mougey's New York Jets tenure has been a mixed bag

Mougey has struggled to find contributors on Day 3 of the NFL Draft. Over the 2025 and 2026 drafts, the Jets have selected Arian Smith, Francisco Mauigoa, Tyler Baron, Cade Klubnik, Darrell Jackson Jr., Anez Cooper, and VJ Payne between rounds four and seven.

Those are still valuable picks, but New York hasn't been able to find real contributors from that bunch. Jackson Jr. has played well at times this season, which is a positive, but the Jets need more from Mougey and his staff.

In addition to these picks, the Jets haven't done great in free agency. Under Mougey, they've signed guys like Justin Fields, Rashad Weaver, Nahshon Wright, and Joseph Ossai. None of these players have done much, which is disappointing, as some were brought in to have serious roles on the team.

There's also an argument to be made for whatever side of the coin you fall on, but as things stand, based on Cimini's comments, Mougey's job is safe, and that's certainly important. It'll be interesting to see how the rest of the season unfolds, but this seems significant.
