Aaron Glenn needed this one on Sunday. At 2-4, and with the likes of the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills on the horizon, the New York Jets had to take care of business against their winless AFC East rival Miami Dolphins in Week 7.
They couldn't get it done. And that's a poor reflection on the head coach. Glenn's Jets dug themselves in a hole early, allowing Miami to build an early 21-7 lead going into the half. His defense, Glenn's self-proclaimed "superpower," was nowhere to be seen when they needed it.
Despite the Dolphins rolling out the likes of Greg Dulcich, Caleb Douglas, and Malik Washington as their top wideouts, it may as well have been Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle out there. Malik Willis threw for 208 yards, while Ollie Gordon rushed for 103 on the ground.
For a coach in Glenn who was looking for his first win as a head coach in division play, this was about as easy a layup as he could've gotten on the schedule. With the prime opportunity in his hands, his team came out with a distinct lack of energy and a sense of unpreparedness.
Aaron Glenn may have sealed his fate as New York Jets head coach
The Jets are unlikely to fire Glenn midseason. Woody Johnson has only done that once in his entire tenure as owner in New York, and that was with Robert Saleh back in 2024. Glenn and Johnson have a much better working relationship than Johnson did with Glenn's predecessor, but losses like these are going to start making the decision to keep him nearly impossible.
Not only were the Jets favored going into this game according to nearly every sports book, but on paper, they're pretty clearly the more talented team than the Dolphins. The reason Miami won today? Their head coach, Jeff Hafley, pushed all the right buttons at the correct times.
Even if the Jets are able to finish this season somewhat respectably, which at this point feels nearly impossible, what is the plan? To run back the same coaching staff? Fire Frank Reich and give Glenn a third offensive coordinator in as many years?
It's becoming more and more evident as the weeks roll by that Glenn is not the head coach who will turn the Jets around. There are still games left to prove detractors wrong, but this one is going to leave a nasty taste in everyone's mouth.
