The New York Jets' contract negotiations with Breece Hall are arguably the biggest storyline going with the team outside the 2026 NFL Draft, and there should be a resolution before the mid-July deadline.
General manager Darren Mougey has made it clear that the Jets and Hall will resume negotiations after the draft, but the two sides were unable to find an agreement before the franchise tag, so there's certainly still a way to go.
It's unclear what New York offered their starting running back before ultimately deciding to use the franchise tag on him. Either way, Hall is currently one of the five highest-paid running backs in the NFL right now, thanks to his fully guaranteed one-year deal.
Will Hall's next contract exceed the mark set by the franchise tag? Or will the Jets be able to get their former second-round pick on a more reasonable yearly salary?
Breece Hall contract projection would make him one of the highest paid RBs in the NFL
Spotrac's Michael Ginnitti released a handful of contract projections for running backs due to receive contract extensions in the near future, and predicted Hall's new deal to reach four years, $62 million, paying him $15.5 million annually.
"Hall’s tag price, plus a few notable free agent contracts this March have increased his calculated value into the $15M per year range. Are the Jets in the right window to be adding multi-year guarantees?"Michael Ginnitti
Hall's $15.5 million AAV would make him the third-highest-paid running back in the league at this moment in time. Of course, that's before Jahmyr Gibbs and Bijan Robinson's contract extensions, which they're expected to receive at some point this offseason.
Regardless, a team like the Jets, with little to no playoff prospects heading into 2026, likely shouldn't be investing that kind of money into a running back.
Not to say that a talented running back isn't valuable, but when you're still trying to build out the rest of your roster, you can ill-afford to pay top of the market for a player who isn't a game breaker.
A more reasonable contract for Hall would look like what the New Orleans Saints gave running back Travis Etienne in free agency, a four-year, $48 million contract.
Anything more is too rich for the Jets, and they're better off looking for a replacement in the draft or in the 2027 draft class.
