Everyone has been focused on Breece Hall's ongoing contract situation with the New York Jets this offseason and for good reason. It was the first time they had used the franchise tag on a player since Marcus Maye in 2021, and Hall is one of the biggest names on the Jets' roster.
But there's another player who's set to be an unrestricted free agent in 2027, and he's arguably just as important as Hall to the Jets offense. Guard Joe Tippmann is set to test the unrestricted free agent waters next offseason, and New York can't let that happen.
The rest of the Jets' offensive line is under contract for the foreseeable future. Their first-round tackles, Olu Fashanu and Armand Membou, still have multiple years of contractual control. Center Josh Myers was recently extended, and guard Dylan Parham was given a two-year deal in free agency.
Tippman is the lone unknown heading into 2026, and the Jets should do everything in their power to get him locked down on a new deal.
Jets need to re-sign Joe Tippmann to a new contract
Tippmann is a young, versatile offensive lineman whom the Jets can't afford to risk losing. Over his three-year career, he's played both guard and center at a respectable level and is only getting better.
The 43rd overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft graded out as the 34th best guard in the NFL last season per Pro Football Focus, and despite not necessarily being elite, he's a homegrown talent who deserves long-term security from the team that drafted him.
ESPN's Rich Cimini theorized in February that Tippmann's next contract "probably would at least triple that" of his 2026 salary. The former Wisconsin Badger is set to make $4 million this year, meaning the annual average value could be around $12 million per year.
A four-year, $48 million contract sounds reasonable for the 25-year-old, whose only missed one game over his three-year career.
Darren Mougey has said he won't engage in contract conversations with Hall until after the 2026 NFL Draft, meaning negotiations with Tippmann and his representatives likely won't start until then either.
Hall is important to the Jets, but Tippmann deserves some love as well when discussing Jets who need to be made a priority to retain their talents.
