The New York Jets don't have many in-house contract negotiations to worry about, but Breece Hall looms largest over the organization.
New York's brass were unable to come to terms with their starting running back and his representatives earlier in the offseason, forcing the Jets to use the franchise tag on Hall before he had the chance to test unrestricted free agency.
It was a good move for New York. They had the cap space to facilitate the $14.3 million franchise tag, and prevented another hole from opening on their roster with the retention of the former second-round pick.
But that doesn't mean the Jets are done trying to lock down Hall on a long-term deal. In fact, it's the opposite. General manager Darren Mougey made it clear at the league owners' meetings that the team plans to turn its attention to Hall after the NFL Draft.
Darren Mougey feels 'good' about long-term deal with Jets RB Breece Hall
Mougey was asked where things currently stand with Hall, and the Jets GM had a positive response about the negotiations.
"Good. Things are in a good place, and I'm hopeful with Breece, obviously. We'll get through this draft process, and after the draft, I'm going to shift my focus back there and hopefully get something done with Breece."Darren Mougey
It sounds like things are smooth between the Jets and Hall's agents, and that's a good thing. Some relationships turn sour after franchise tags in recent NFL history, but it seems there's a mutual understanding here.
Hall's projected contract is a tricky one. Spotrac believes the former Iowa State standout is worth a four-year, $41.5 million deal, but that seems a little low on the average annual value.
The $10.4 million AAV would make Hall the 12th-highest-paid running back in the NFL, and it's likely he's looking for fewer years on the deal so he can hit the market again at a younger age.
A similar contract that the Los Angeles Rams gave their star running back, Kyren Williams, sounds more reasonable for a player of Hall's caliber. The former Notre Dame star inked a three-year, $33 million contract last summer.
Hall would make less total money than the projected Spotrac contract, but make more annually, and can test free agency at age 27.
We'll see if Mougey sticks to his word and Hall signs his new contract sometime in May.
