Jets insider reveals likelihood of Breece Hall signing a long-term extension

Will Breece play on the franchise tag?

One of the first moves the New York Jets made this offseason was franchise tagging impending free agent running back Breece Hall, keeping him off the open market and ensuring he remains in New York for at least one more season on a $14.3 million salary.

It was a wise move from general manager Darren Mougey. The Jets' offseason priority was to fill roster holes, not create them, and losing Hall would've just meant that the team would have to go out and get themselves a new starting running back.

Now, the Jets have until mid-July to come to terms with Hall on a long-term extension, and the team seems interested in getting it done, despite not being able to agree on a contract before the franchise tag deadline.

Will the Jets lock down Hall for the long haul? The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt seems to think it's more than likely.

Zack Rosenblatt says there's a 60% chance Jets sign Breece Hall to an extension

Rosenblatt answered a question in his recent mailbag asking whether or not Hall would end up playing on the franchise tag in 2026.

"There has been confidence on both sides that a deal will eventually get done, but I personally still think there’s a chance Hall winds up playing on the franchise tag. Call it 60-40 that he signs a deal versus playing on the tag."

The Jets insider noted that Mougey's philosophy is to hold off on any extension talks until after the NFL Draft, so the negotiation window likely opens in early May, giving team brass just under two months to get a deal done with Hall.

New York should be doing what it can to get a deal done with the former second-round pick. The running back market is about to explode, with the likes of Bijan Robinson and Jahmyr Gibbs set to receive monster extensions from the Atlanta Falcons and Detroit Lions, respectively.

Hall isn't the same caliber as either of those players, but the Jets should do their best to lock him down before the price on running backs skyrockets out of control.

Spotrac projected Hall to land a four-year, $41.5 million deal, but a shorter deal with more money on a per-year basis seems more likely. The three-year, $36 million contract the Cleveland Browns gave Nick Chubb in 2024 sounds reasonable for all parties.

We'll see if the Jets and Hall can meet somewhere in the middle, but if Rosenblatt's prediction is accurate, we should see the former Iowa State standout in Green & White for at least a few more seasons.
