The New York Jets have many very impactful decisions to be made with regard to their impending free agents, but no player will directly impact winning and losing as much as running back Breece Hall. After four seasons of service, Hall is now up for a big payday.

Jets general manager Darren Mougey is getting out ahead of all the speculation by confirming where Hall is going to play in 2026, all while disappointing the rest of the league, who had their eyes set on possibly taking one of the most electric ball-carries in the NFL away from his only pro home.

Mougey confirmed that if the Jets are unable to reach any sort of long-term agreement with Hall, he will be hit with either the transition or franchise tag. It looks like Hall is going to be locked in as one of the Jets' starters for the 2026 season.

Hall managed to run for 1,000 yards this season and score five touchdowns, all while tallying his third consecutive season with at least 1,350 yards from scrimmage. Even with deplorable quarterback play, Hall was still one of the best backs in the AFC.

The franchise tag would pay Hall like an elite running back at just over $14 million this season. The transition tag might be better for Hall, as it gives him the ability to negotiate with other teams while coming in at a few million per year cheaper.

This may not be the happiest arrangement in the world. Hall has found himself often putting out some very mopey tweets in the last few months, and his seemingly lukewarm response when asked about returning to the Jets seemingly implies that he isn't thrilled about New York.

However, Hall is one of the best players in the league at his position, and the Jets are in such a bad spot roster-wise that they aren't in a position to thumb their nose at someone with his game-breaking talents. Aaron Glenn has spoken at length about how he wants to run the ball, and Hall certainly will help in that area.

Hall is one of the best players on this very thin New York roster, and even with all the pitfalls that come with him, it's hard to argue that the Jets will be a better roster in 2026 without Hall leading the charge in the backfield.
