The New York Jets need to figure out how to spend their oodles of cap space in the next few months, and one way to invest that money into a homegrown developmental option would be handing guard Joe Tippmann an extension.
After moving from center to right guard this season, Tippmann became one of the few players on this team who can genuinely say they improved in 2025. Even with Justin Fields' poor pocket presence weighing down the offensive line, Tippmann proved he is worth committing to.
In an article outlining what Aaron Glenn needs to do to have a successful season in 2026, Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic believes that one of the no-brainer moves this front office can do to get things started off on a good foot is extending Tippmann.
The offensive lineman came into his own at right guard last season, and he’s eligible for a new contract," Rosenblatt said. "Tippmann, I’m told, would love to sign a new deal with the Jets early, especially now that his value has increased playing (and thriving) at guard as opposed to center, the position they drafted him to play."
Jets could extend offensive lineman Joe Tippmann soon
Tippmann made the transition to right guard after the injury to Alijah Vera-Tucker, and he put together what was likely his best season in the pros. After signing center Josh Myers to an extension, the Jets can roll into 2026 with four of their five starters on the offensive line locked in.
The right side of the offensive line is already one of the best such combinations in the league, as Tippmann at right guard and rookie sensation Armand Membou at right tackle could both man those starting roles for the next decade. Olu Fashanu is starting to come into his own at left tackle.
Part of the appeal of trading away Sauce Gardner and Quinnen Williams is to free up money that could be spent on some of their other young players that fit this timeline. The offensive line could be together for years and years if handled correctly, and locking Tippman down should be a top priority.
The Jets don't have much to hang their hat on in terms of talent on the roster, but the line is solid, and moving quickly to extend Tippmann could be a way to give fans confidence that this front office is building a sustainable unit for the future.
