The New York Jets and the rest of the NFL are in an off period right now. Minicamp has come to a close, and training camp isn't set to begin until late July, giving players and coaches ample opportunity to rest before the work begins.

Once training camp kicks off, things start moving fast. Joint practices will be just after that, and the Jets have a date with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Florham Park on August 11.

Ahead of their preseason matchup, the Jets and the Buccaneers will have a chance to test each other on the practice field, and it will be a good measuring stick of each team's summer progress.

But one Jets position group seems primed to take advantage of their matchup against Tampa Bay, and it should be good practice ahead of the regular season.

Jets can get extra work in the passing game against Buccaneers secondary

Last season, the Buccaneers had one of the league's worst pass defenses. They gave up the sixth-most passing yards per game, surrendering 238.2 yards on a weekly basis.

The Jets, who have spent practically the entire offseason retooling and overhauling their quarterback room and weaponry, can take advantage of this during joint practices and use it as an opportunity to get reps against an opposing NFL team.

Quarterback Geno Smith is still building chemistry with his new weapons. It's not like he has experience throwing to the likes of Garrett Wilson and Adonai Mitchell in game scenarios.

Joint practice isn't a game scenario, of course, but it's at least better than throwing on air.

Even more importantly, the Jets' two offensive first-round draft picks, tight end Kenyon Sadiq and wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr., will get their first taste of action against a defense that isn't their own team.

It will be a valuable experience for the youngsters and will even give them opportunities to further build chemistry with their veteran quarterback.

Of course, there's still a long way to go before those practices get underway. The Jets will have plenty of time to work all aspects of their game before settling into the final month of the offseason.
