Geno Smith-Adonai Mitchell connection continuing to grow at Jets minicamp

The New York Jets have plenty of reason to be excited about their offense heading into 2026, despite the most recent sample size for their current quarterback.

Geno Smith, who led the league in interceptions with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2025, has been tapped to restore some stability to the Jets quarterback room after the disasterclass they had with Justin Fields under center last season.

Working in Smith's favor is his new supporting cast. With the Raiders, the 35-year-old quarterback lost his best wide receiver at the trade deadline, had a bad offensive playcaller who lost his job before the end of the season, and a bottom-tier offensive line.

At minimum, with the Jets, he's guaranteed to have a better array of weaponry to work with, certainly better pass blocking, and hopefully a better offensive coordinator.

But one weapon is starting to stand out as Smith's favorite, and their connection seems to only be growing in mandatory minicamp.

The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt, who is in attendance at Jets' minicamp, shared a play from practice highlighting the budding chemistry between Smith and Mitchell.

Mitchell, just a throw-in from last year's Sauce Gardner trade, seems primed to play a major role in New York's offense in 2026.

The former second-round draft pick has never really had a chance to showcase his skills. In Indianapolis, he was always buried on the depth chart behind the likes of Michael Pittman Jr., Alec Pierce, and Josh Downs.

Last year in New York, he was thrown into the mix midseason and had to pick up the offense on the fly.

Now, he's receiving a full offseason program and first-team reps to ingratiate himself with his new team and offense, and it seems like he's taking full advantage.

When you have a star on the field like Garrett Wilson, there's going to be plenty of 1-on-1 opportunities for the other pass catchers on the opposite side of the field. Mitchell could be the primary benefactor of those chances.

If he and Smith can continue to build their chemistry this summer, the duo will be ready to hit the ground running come September and take the top off of opposing defenses.
