The New York Jets have been hard at work over the last few weeks, transitioning from offseason workouts to OTAs and finally into mandatory minicamp.
The Jets were supposed to have their third and final day of minicamp on Thursday of this week. Instead, head coach Aaron Glenn canceled practice and held a team meeting to discuss what he expects from them when they reconvene in late July.
Clearly, Glenn saw what he wanted from his players over the last few weeks and believes they showed enough to warrant the extra rest.
Aaron Glenn pleased with early Jets summer practices
Speaking with reporters on Thursday, Glenn explained his decision to cancel the final day of mandatory minicamp and what he saw from them to justify his decision.
"So obviously, I cancelled practice today, had the players come in, we had our team meeting, which we discussed things that went on throughout the offseason, and someAaron Glenn
expectations of what I want from the guys as they come back. But listen, the guys have given me, the coaching staff, even themselves and their teammates, everything that I asked of them throughout these phases. The participation has been outstanding. The work they've put in has been outstanding, and I like exactly where we're at."
Clearly, Glenn is satisfied with the first few days of practice and likes the attendance and work ethic he's seeing from his players.
Hopefully, Glenn is sure about his decision. The Jets were a 3-14 team last year, and surely could've used every ounce of practice they could have gotten.
But, in fairness, this is a different roster with different leadership on the field. And maybe that's exactly what the Jets needed to start moving in the right direction.
"(What) I told those guys is, I want to get to the point to where I love where we’re at, and we know that when you want to love it, it’s going to take some time, so we know exactly the things that we have to do to improve in those areas. But I do like where we’re at and looking forward to some downtime and then getting into training camp and getting to the point to where I love exactly where we are as a team."Aaron Glenn
The Jets will have a little more than a month to get ready for the start of training camp, as the first day of the next phase begins on July 28, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini.
