The New York Jets were an aggressive team this offseason, going out and getting as much talent as they possibly could, adding to a roster that won only three games in 2025.
Darren Mougey went and targeted experienced veterans on defense, such as linebacker Demario Davis and defensive lineman David Onyemata, but one of the more exciting additions was trade acquisition Minkah Fitzpatrick.
The former Miami Dolphin should be the best safety the Jets have had in nearly a decade, and will certainly bring a level of playmaking and leadership that New York didn't have last season.
But what is it exactly that Fitzpatrick is bringing to the Jets' defense, and how will he help them improve on their weaknesses from 2025?
Aaron Glenn compares Minkah Fitzpatrick to Demario Davis with leadership skills
Speaking with reporters, Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed what he expects from Fitzpatrick in 2026.
"Very similar to what I expect out of Double D (Demario Davis), a veteran presence. Not just with the secondary, but just overall with the team. And he's done a good job of that. "Aaron Glenn
Last season, the Jets had a severe lack of leadership on defense. Defensive tackle Harrison Phillips was New York's most local leader, and he arrived on the scene in August.
Players like Fitzpatrick and Davis should immediately step in as role models within the Jets locker room.
But that's not the only thing Glenn hopes Fitzpatrick brings to the Jets defense.
"Also, play-making ability. I mean, he's done that through the course of his career, so I don't expect that to change at all. We want guys that can get their hands on the ball, we want guys that can make plays. And we also want guys that, when things break down, have the instincts to get us right back where we need to be, to give us another chance to have another play."Aaron Glenn
As you've probably heard, the Jets failed to record a single interception last season, something that's never been done before in NFL history.
That's why the team went out and added multiple playmakers on defense, including Fitzpatrick.
The three-time All-Pro has recorded 21 interceptions over his eight-year career and forced six fumbles.
Fitzpatrick's nose for the football is something that the Jets sorely need. Hopefully, he, along with the team's other new defensive additions, can help flip the script in 2026.
