We haven’t even reached June 1, and the Adonai Mitchell hype train is continuing at full speed.
The New York Jets acquired Mitchell, a former Texas standout receiver, in the Sauce Gardner trade last November.
Excitement has mounted about Mitchell breaking out with Geno Smith at quarterback and Frank Reich calling plays.
Garrett Wilson might be entrenched as the top dog, and Omar Cooper Jr. arrives with high expectations.
But don’t you dare rule out Mitchell, who is already turning heads during summer workouts.
Jets fans better prepare for the Adonai Mitchell breakout
Thursday afternoon gave Jets reporters an extended look at the Smith-Mitchell connection.
So far, so extremely good.
According to The Athletic, Mitchell overcame the weather to leave quite the impression during 7-on-7 drills on Thursday.
“Smith threw it where the cornerback couldn’t get to it — and into heavy winds — and Mitchell was able to come back and make the catch,” The Athletic’s Zack Rosenblatt explained.
That sound you hear is Jets fans’ lips curling upward in a smile.
Yes, a Jets receiver not named Garrett Wilson putting fans in a good mood.
We have truly entered a bizzaro world, haven’t we?
Jokes aside, maybe we shouldn’t be overly surprised. The belief has long been that Mitchell will join Wilson and Cooper in the Week 1 lineup.
Mitchell is only helping his case to remain in that spot.
Social media can say whatever it wants, but summer workouts should mean something.
Perhaps the best way to look at organized team activities is the idea that the small things add up.
The young players who impress on and off the field may play themselves into a larger preseason role. From there, the players who take full advantage might get increased regular-season snaps.
Much like teammate Mazi Smith, Mitchell arrived last November alongside draft picks in a blockbuster trade.
Smith, a former Cowboys first-round pick, is already reportedly fighting for a roster spot.
Mitchell, who is under contract through 2027, appears all but assured of starting against the Titans on Sept 13.
Just let it be known that we predicted the Mitchell breakthrough even before the draft.
By the time November rolls around, we’ll happily take that standing ovation.
If Mitchell’s strong finish to last year is a sign of things to come, he’ll be enjoying a far louder reaction much sooner than that.
