The New York Jets kicked off mandatory minicamp with one of the key members of their offensive line in right guard Joe Tippmann, needing a new contract. Tippmann and the Jets have come together to strike a deal, and the result is an absolute masterclass from Darren Mougey. Tippmann's deal pays him well, but it by no means breaks the bank.
Tippmann signed a four-year extension worth up to $66 million with $35 million in guaranteed money. In an offseason where the interior offensive line market is starting to explode thanks to deals like the Tyler Linderbaum mega contract, Mougey was able to lock up one of the Jets' key young players for less than what some below-par guards are being paid.
Tippmann's contract puts him at No. 15 in the league among guards in terms of average annual value. Tippmann's deal will pay him less than what the Browns, Vikings, and Commanders are paying Zion Johnson, Will Fries, and Sam Cosmi, respectively.
Locking up Tippmann for the same price as David Edwards is a major victory for Mougey, who keeps stacking the little victories here and there.

Tippmann was picked No. 43 overall in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft. While this draft is a bit of a wash on a macro scale due to how bad Day 3 was, Joe Douglas may have been able to land two long-term building blocks if the Jets follow this with a Will McDonald extension. Tippmann has been the superior player in terms of overall impact.
After putting together some mixed (but mostly positive) seasons at center for the first two years of his career, Tippmann really unlocked his full potential when Aaron Glenn and his coaching staff kicked him over to right guard. Tippmann became one of the best at his position in the AFC.
With this deal soon to be official, Mougey and the Jets now have three of their best linemen in Tippmann, left tackle Olu Fashanu, and right tackle Armand Membou, all signed for at least the 2027 season. With Mougey saving some money on this deal, the Jets are now more likely to be able to keep this team together.
Mougey needs to show he can put together a winning team before the praise gets too out of hand, but with the Jets locking up what few extendable players they do have, the team is positioned to eventually turn it around.
