When the New York Jets hired offensive coordinator Frank Reich back in February, there were concerns that the longtime coach was taking the job just because. After all, he was on the verge of retirement after his last gig with the Carolina Panthers.
Instead, the 64-year-old seems rejuvenated by his new role with the Jets, and every time Reich speaks to the media, he's glowing about another player or coach he's now working with in New York.
Most recently, Reich spoke with reporters on Wednesday and took the opportunity to praise the new quarterback-wide receiver duo he's coaching up.
And believe it or not, he wasn't talking about superstar wideout Garrett Wilson.
Frank Reich raves about Jets pass catcher Adonai Mitchell
Reich couldn't have been more positive about Mitchell's presence in New York, and seemed incredibly excited about what he and Wilson would be able to achieve on the field in 2026, according to The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt.
"I just want to be in the room he’s in because he’s going to light up the room … between him and Garrett, that combo has been really good. AD has shown himself well through this whole program in the offseason … our confidence in him is really high right now."Frank Reich
Despite joining the Jets midseason last year, Mitchell and Wilson unfortunately never saw the field together. Wilson had played his last game in Week 6 before suffering what would eventually be a season-ending knee injury.
In the wake of Wilson's absence, Mitchell stepped up as the Jets' interim WR1 and did what he could with the abysmal quarterback play to end the 2025 season.
Mitchell appeared in eight games down the stretch, starting four, and hauled in 24 passes for 301 yards and two touchdowns. He was second on the Jets in yards per reception, gaining 12.5 yards on every catch.
Jets fans itched to see Wilson return from injury (but only if he was truly healthy), to see what he and Mitchell could do on the field together.
As one of the most talented receivers in football, Wilson soaks up a lot of attention from opposing defenses, and that would've freed up a lot of opportunities for Mitchell to shine.
Instead, the Jets smartly played it safe, and they decided to save unleashing the duo for 2026.
Reich will be able to get creative when scheming up passing plays for these two wideouts and their unique skillsets, and it's no wonder he's so excited to have both of them to work with.
