Jets fans giving up on 2026 is the exact defeatist attitude the team needs to purge

The New York Jets have made some major roster improvements as they prepare for Aaron Glenn's second season in charge, but that won't stop pessimistic fans from already looking forward to a 2027 season with someone else at the helm.

A large contingent of fans online seems to not only be rooting for the playoff drought to be extended to 16 seasons, but for 2026 to be such a disaster that the team wins barely any games on their way to a No. 1 pick.

As if being a Jets fan wasn't enough of an emotional tax, now there's a movement to root for even more misery?

New York Jets fans who want to tank in 2026 are missing the point

Jets fans, who one thinks would know better after getting the No. 2 pick in a loaded quarterback draft and still busting with Zach Wilson, seem to be of the mindset that the only way for a team to rapidly improve is pairing a top pick quarterback with a young, offensive-minded coach.

Teams like the Bears and Jaguars prove the validity of that line of thinking, but that is not the only way to build a winner. The most recent Super Bowl was between two defensive coaches, one journeyman quarterback who needed to be backed up for a few seasons, and one rookie who was a historical outlier in so many key areas.

The common refrain from the tankers seems to be along the lines of "the roster is good, but the coach and quarterback stink." To give them a brief kernel of credit, that's not entirely untrue.

However, wouldn't it be better for everyone if Glenn looked like he could turn things around and Smith gave the team solid quarterback play after last season's unwatchable dreck? Do these fans really want to sit through a replay of last year? Was that fun for all of you?

Tanking in 2026 would have some sever bad effects for the New York Jets

Consider what would need to happen for this team to once again bottom out and win barely any games. All those young players people liked in the 2026 NFL Draft, like Kenyon Sadiq or No. 2 pick David Bailey, will have probably underachieved if there is so little team success. All those veteran additions fans liked (looking at you, Demario Davis) would be gone.

Why would Garrett Wilson, the team's best player, want to stick around after another losing season? Would fans be OK with another losing season if you lose one of the best Jets draft picks in recent memory?

Pro-tank fans have also seemingly separated Glenn and GM Darren Mougey. Every decision they don't like is Glenn's, and every one they do is Mougey's. After two putrid seasons, why would Mougey be given a third season?

Why would you want to root for all of that rather than hoping the Colts, Cowboys, or Packers, all of whom could kick their first-round pick over to the Jets depending on position?

The tankers seem to be of the mindset that this current Jets roster, which would be stripped for spare parts if they stink again, is a rookie quarterback and a young coach away from competing, which is simply not the case. Rather than try to achieve a winning season (you know, winning! The whole point of playing football), fans would rather wallow in being a laughingstock.

Aaron Glenn is trying to end the mopey New York Jets

The "Same Old Jets" narrative exists for multiple reasons. Not only is the team in a perpetual state of stepping on rakes with grenades taped to the end, but the moping around and resignation whenever something goes wrong have gotten tiresome.

The tankers are hoping for that to continue for one more year and then immediately expect a new coach and rookie quarterback to fix everything instantly, all because they don't like Aaron Glenn. Imagine watching football through that prism.

Rather than subscribe to the Saleh mope and try to instruct everyone that being the worst team in the league again is actually a very prudent move for the long-term health of the franchise, can fans dare to dream about eight wins? Is it ridiculous for people to want success after 15 years?
