Zach Wilson being used as an excuse to demean the Jets yet again

Whatever the New York Jets did to Mike Renner and CBS Sports’ NFL team, I’m starting to get the feeling that not even an Oreo cake with vanilla frosting will smooth things over. 

Jets fans have spent the offseason watching CBS Sports consistently demean the team, from having it out for Garrett Wilson to offering bizarre commentary on Geno Smith and the Jets’ quarterback room.

Renner took things to a drastic level this week, listing former Jets quarterback Zach Wilson as the second-worst first-round pick of the 2020s. 

Only the 49ers' bust Trey Lance placed lower, and if we were solely talking quarterbacks, we could at least have a conversation. 

But the idea that Wilson is the second-worst player of the 191 first-round picks from 2020 through 2025?

Come on, Mike. 

CBS Sports went above and beyond in disrespecting Zach Wilson and the Jets

In nearly 20 years of watching football, I have rarely seen a sports network or outlet go above and beyond in consistently ripping an NFL team the way that CBS Sports has with the Jets. 

You cannot tell me with a straight face that Wilson has been worse than Anthony Richardson, who once sat out a play because he was tired. For all of Wilson’s many issues in New York, neither effort nor maturity was among them.

What about Jeff Okudah, the former Vikings cornerback who played for four teams in six seasons? Oh, and Okudah was the No. 3 pick, so Wilson going No. 2 shouldn’t be the deciding factor here.  

And that’s not even factoring in former Raiders receiver Henry Ruggs III, who is serving a prison sentence for a fatal drunk driving accident. 

But above all else, Renner placed ex-Titans offensive tackle Isaiah Wilson at No. 188, two spots above Zach Wilson. 

Wilson, the No. 29 pick in 2020, played four snaps in the NFL. Not four games or four years. No, he played four snaps and was out of the league by January 2022. 

So allow me to understand. Zach Wilson is entering his sixth season, yet placed below someone who played a measly four snaps?

This is exactly why I’ve argued that CBS Sports truly has it out for the Jets. They have embraced “lol Jets” to such an extent that they’re ignoring common sense to point at and mock the franchise. 

And to be clear, this isn’t The Jet Press being biased. Wilson should rank among the worst first-round picks of the 2020s, and there’s no revisionist history to be had. Fans universally agreed at the time that he was picked way too high in 2021. 

I’d say make it make sense, but that’s clearly asking too much of CBS Sports at this point.
