Woody Johnson's true feelings on Robert Saleh add more spice to Week 1

As New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn tries to clean up the mess left in his wake by Robert Saleh, the latest rumors make it seem like he will have a much longer leash.

According to the latest from Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic, Johnson was never particularly fond of Saleh as a coach, as Woody's brother Christopher was in charge of making that hire. Rosenblatt mentioned that Johnson has a much closer relationship with Glenn than he ever did with Saleh.

Glenn reportedly has a "very close" relationship with Johnson, which could be tough to hear for a coach like Saleh, who was being undermined at seemingly every turn when he was trying to turn this team around. As if the Jets-Titans Week 1 game didn't have enough intrigue going into it, things will be turned up a notch.

While Johnson and Saleh apparently never got along, the Jets' owner did have enough patience to give him parts of four seasons as the head coach. Saleh never recorded a winning season during that time. While there were innumerable issues that went far beyond his agency, he certainly didn't make things easy on himself by bungling the quarterback position and constantly putting his foot in his mouth at the podium.

Johnson, to his credit, is giving Glenn the room he needs to dig this team out of the rubble the Aaron Rodgers neutron bomb left in its wake. Glenn did go 3-14 and started 0-7 in 2025, but Johnson seemingly wants Glenn to succeed so ferociously that he will give him the time needed to right the ship.

Robert Saleh wants to prove the New York Jets wrong

Saleh is conducting a thought experiment. Can the failed Jets and Giants coaches and players of yesteryear succeed away from the Johnson and Mara families?

Offensive coordinator Brian Daboll and quarterbacks coach Shea Tierney brought Austin Schlottmann, Wan'Dale Robinson, and Daniel Bellinger from Big Blue. Saleh rehired many of his Jets assistants on defense while adding Jermaine Johnson II, John Franklin-Myers, Tony Adams, and Solomon Thomas to the mix.

This Week 1 matchup could be a sign that Johnson and the Jets shouldn't have been so quick to get rid of Saleh or further proof that booting him out of town in favor of Glenn will benefit this team in the short term.
