When the New York Jets hired Darren Mougey as their general manager, they apparently made a critical mistake when touting his resume.
There was no mention of him being a magician, which is an incredibly important thing to omit.
After all, anyone who can repeatedly make Jets fans smile must have been trained in some sort of art.
Mougey’s latest feat came on Monday, signing starting right guard Joe Tippmann to a four-year, $62 million extension.
Tippman, who was entering the final season of his rookie contract, will receive $31 million in guaranteed money. He began his career at center but moved to guard midway through the 2024 season.
The Jets extended Breece Hall last month, had three first-round picks, and reunited with quarterback Geno Smith. Suffice to say, Mougey has kept busy.
Jets fans love the Joe Tippmann contract extension
A Reddit thread dedicated to Tippman’s new contract shows plenty of Jets fans who love what Mougey is trying to build.
“Obviously needs to translate to wins, but Mougey has been getting these contracts done like clockwork,” read one response. “We have the young core of this OL locked up for years.”
Another commenter added, “He’ll look even better on a team that wins. One thing [is] for sure, I love his versatility. Great move Mougey. The skies are clearing.”
Multiple Reddit users praised Mougey and Jets ownership for ensuring that the Jets’ next potential franchise quarterback inherits an offense with several established players already in place.
The Jets extended Garrett Wilson last summer, and they selected Oregon tight end Kenyon Sadiq and Indiana receiver Omar Cooper Jr. in this spring’s first round.
“Another sensational move from our GM,” one user wrote. “Tip still only 25 and I’m going to call it early, he outperforms this contract.”
Others referenced the Jets’ decision to pick Tippmann over Minnesota center John Michael Schmitz in the 2023 draft. The Jets took Tippman at No. 43, and Schmitz fell to the Giants at No. 57.
Although Schmitz remains the Giants’ starting center, he is entering the final year of his rookie contract, and there is no indication that the team will extend him before Week 1.
“I’m not saying we’re out of the darkness, but I’m starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel,” read one comment.
Good on Mougey. When you get Jets fans to think positively, you know that you’re doing something right.
