It’s technically still early in the 2025 NFL season. Nothing should feel completely doom and gloom with three months of games still ahead, but quarterback play for the New York Jets has left a lot to be desired, and that’s probably an understatement.
Justin Fields has struggled mightily — again, an understatement. He had a promising start in Week 1, looking like the same player once hyped as one of college football’s top stars at Ohio State.
But that optimism unraveled almost overnight with a miserable performance against Buffalo, followed by games where he’s only padded his stats in garbage time.
The 2021 draft pick has often looked lost. He holds onto the ball far too long, takes unnecessary coverage sacks, and shows questionable ball placement. Some of that falls on the Jets for forcing him into a pocket-passing role and not letting him use his legs more, but Fields has also shown a stunning lack of awareness.
That reached a low point in Week 6 against the Denver Broncos, when Fields delivered his worst performance yet as a Jet. He took nine sacks while completing just 9 of 17 passes for 45 yards, repeatedly missing open receivers and stalling drives.
Fields looked like a deer in the headlights, even as the rest of the team finally cleaned up defensive and special teams miscues to stay competitive.
Ultimately, it came down to quarterback play, and the frustration has reached a point where some fans want change.
Jets fans urge Aaron Glenn to change starting quarterbacks
Jets social media erupted after the game, blasting Fields and questioning when Tyrod Taylor, who started in Week 3, might take over. Fans certainly didn’t hold back.
Can we stop this Justin fields experiment

Dude has never been more than a backup QB in the league
If the Jets were a serious franchise Tyrod Taylor would be starting pic.twitter.com/HrB7i7Selg
I don't wanna see Justin Fields again this season man. Put Tyrod Taylor on the field.

If he wants a chance to win, I don’t know how you don’t put Tyrod Taylor in at this point if you are Aaron Glenn.

Fields can’t seem to throw a pass even when WRs are open. pic.twitter.com/pbrvkuvzhm
The Jets chose this. In the offseason and in this game. Some people really believed Justin Fields was a better option than Aaron Rodgers. Tyrod Taylor would have won the game. They stuck with Fields and the clueless HC is acting offended after being asked about a QB change. https://t.co/oiu4ea3s2Y

tyrod taylor should be starting

he is infinitely better than justin fields
but aaron glenn knows more, surely https://t.co/XJtbY96qTN
Tyrod Taylor has to be the starter soon. He's the better QB and Fields is in year 5. You aren't playing him for development anymore. He is who he is. https://t.co/eIrsbDyRE7

So, will the Jets change quarterbacks? Not yet.
After the 13-11 loss, head coach Aaron Glenn dismissed a very reasonable question about Fields' status as the starting quarterback.
“What kind of question is that?” Glenn said to reporters. “There are guys that have bad games. That doesn’t mean you just bench them. Come on, you know better than that.”
After Fields' horrendous performance, it makes sense to question who will start in Week 7. Tanner Engstrand didn’t call plays as if the staff trusted him, from the way the second half opened with designed runs and bootlegs to the puzzling end of the first half, when the Jets ran out the clock after a successful fake punt attempt. Nothing about this proclaimed him as the guy.
Taylor won't set the world on fire. He’s 36 years old, has been in the NFL for 15 years, and isn’t anyone’s long-term answer.
But the Jets have a steady roster outside of the quarterback position, and with even a mildly competent game manager, someone who isn’t afraid to throw the ball and give his receivers a chance to make plays, they might actually win a game or two. It's not an asinine concept.
