Justin Fields put together one of the most inept performances by a New York Jets quarterback in franchise history in the team's Week 6 loss to the Denver Broncos. There's no reason to even list out the numbers, as they wouldn't do this level of ineptitude justice.
The entire offense was handcuffed by a quarterback whom the team couldn't trust to make a single post-snap read throughout the entire game. It was one of the most pathetic and incompetent quarterback performances you will ever see at the NFL level.
The Jets played a nearly flawless game all around. The defense was outstanding. The special teams continuously put the Jets in advantageous situations. The team was penalized just twice and won the turnover battle for the first time this season.
But rather than acknowledge his quarterback's poor performance and even ponder the possibility of a change, Jets head coach Aaron Glenn responded to a reporter's question with one of the most pathetic answers you will ever hear from an NFL coach.
It's a response that should — and likely will — have the Jets' locker room and coaches alike furious entering next week's game. When asked if Fields would remain the starter in Week 6, Glenn didn't just guarantee his QB a starting job; he mocked the reporter for even posing such a question.
"C'mon man. What kind of question is that? There are guys who have bad games. That doesn't mean you just bench him, you know better than that."Aaron Glenn
Everyone on the Jets should be furious about Aaron Glenn's pathetic Justin Fields comments
It's one thing to stand at that podium and declare Justin Fields the starter again next week. That alone would be a tough sell after the level of ineptitude he’s shown for most of the season. But it was Glenn’s tone and full response that made it downright infuriating.
He didn’t just back his quarterback — he mocked the very idea of considering a change. That’s the kind of arrogance that alienates a locker room. When your team is desperate for answers, laughing off a legitimate question about your quarterback is the worst possible look.
Everyone in that Jets locker room knows what just went down in today's game. Everyone on the coaching staff — most notably offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand — is fully aware of the situation.
To pretend that switching from Fields to an experienced veteran in Tyrod Taylor is somehow this incomprehensible thought is nothing short of insulting and reprehensible.
The Jets just spent an entire 60 minutes of game time practically screaming to anyone who would listen that they didn't trust their quarterback. They didn't even trust Fields to throw an end-of-half Hail Mary because they believed it was more likely to result in a positive play for the other team.
Yet, according to Glenn, it's insulting to even suggest making a change at the quarterback position.
Imagine being in that Jets locker room and hearing a quote like this. Imagine being on that Jets defense and seeing this. Imagine being Tanner Engstrand, forced to essentially run an offense blindfolded and handcuffed, and your head coach says this.
It's insulting. It's embarrassing. It's pathetic. And if Glenn isn't careful, he risks alienating not just the Jets fan base (which he's already done), but the locker room and his offensive coaching staff.
There’s only so long players will tolerate watching their hard work undone by a quarterback who can’t execute and a head coach who refuses to see it. At some point, accountability has to start at the top, and if Glenn won’t make the tough decisions, someone above him eventually will.
