The NY Jets will be one of the most interesting teams to monitor in this year's NFL Draft. With a number of obvious roster holes and the No. 7 overall pick, the Jets can go in a number of different directions come April.
They plan to keep all their options on the table.
Jets general manager Darren Mougey spoke to at the NFL Combine on Tuesday, and when asked if he believes his team would be open to trading up for a quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft, he made it clear that they're not ruling anything out.
Mougey insisted that the Jets will have the flexibility to consider both a trade-up and a trade-down in April's draft. Yes, that includes the possibility of moving up for someone like Miami quarterback Cam Ward.
"I do. I think at [pick No.] 7 right now we are going to be open to potentially moving up for a player or moving back. All of those options are on the table right now."Darren Mougey
NY Jets are open to trading the No. 7 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft
Mougey's comments shouldn't come as a surprise. The Jets aren't going to back themselves into a corner and confine themselves to their current position in the draft order. They're especially not going to tell reporters that at a scheduled press conference in February.
The Jets could explore the possibility of a trade-up for Ward — or even Colorado's Sheduer Sanders — depending on their evaluation of the top quarterbacks in this year's draft and how the board falls.
If Ward surprisingly slips to pick No. 5, perhaps the Jets would consider moving up to jump in front of the Las Vegas Raiders, who are also in the market for quarterback help. It's one possible scenario to keep in mind as we approach April.
The team could also look into potential trade-down options, especially in a draft class that doesn't appear to be very top-heavy. Trading down to acquire additional draft capital would make sense, although it would require finding a team willing to move up.
Either way, the Jets aren't in a rush to make any decisions. Mougey and head coach Aaron Glenn are just over a month into their tenure with the organization. The evaluation process is still ongoing.
The Jets are leaving all avenues open for the 2025 NFL Draft — just like everyone expected.
