Recent weeks have seen renewed speculation about the New York Jets possibly drafting Arch Manning or Dante Moore next spring.
As it turns out, the Jets might not need to wait that long to land a highly-touted quarterback.
Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby announced on Monday night that he intends to enter the rarely used supplemental draft, which would be held later this summer.
The Sorbsy situation has taken over the entire sports landscape, especially after some college programs outright said they’d refuse to consider playing Texas Tech moving forward.
Whether or not the Jets should target Sorsby is far deeper than a simple “yes” or “no.”
But for those unfamiliar with the supplemental draft, we’re here to help.
What to know about Brendan Sorsby and the supplemental NFL draft
The supplemental draft is an immensely complicated process, but we’ll try to keep it simple.
Players typically declare for the supplemental draft if an off-field issue affects their eligibility for the upcoming college season.
NFL teams then bid for their services, and the league uses a lottery to determine which clubs will land the player in question.
If the Jets submitted a second-round bid on Sorsby and won, they would then forfeit a 2027 second-round pick.
Notable supplemental draft players since 2000 include Josh Gordon, Terelle Pryor, and former 49ers All-Pro linebacker Ahmad Brooks.
Cris Carter is the only Hall of Fame player taken in the traditional supplemental draft.
If Sorsby is approved for the supplemental draft, it would likely take place in July.
The New York Jets’ history with the supplemental draft
As of June 2026, the New York Jets’ only supplemental draft pick came in 1990.
Thankfully for the Jets, they got their money’s worth with that pick.
Syracuse receiver Rob Moore had graduated from college early but didn’t declare for the standard draft in time.
The Jets used a first-round supplemental pick on Moore, who totaled 306 catches for 4.528 yards and 22 touchdowns over four seasons.
Moore’s best season, a 78-catch and 1,010 campaign in 1994, earned him Pro Bowl honors and a contract with the Cardinals.
The supplemental draft last occurred in 2023, and no player has been selected since the Cardinals used a fifth-round pick on Washington State defensive back Jalen Thompson in 2019.
