Jets' Brendan Sorsby interest hinges entirely on Cade Klubnik

The New York Jets had previously been told that they need not worry about controversial Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby until the 2027 NFL Draft. Late on Monday Night, Sorsby's situation switched on a dime, and it put him back in New York's sights. Could another quarterback join Geno Smith and Cade Klubnik in the room?

Just days after a Lubbock County court ruled Sorsby was to be suspended for just two games for betting thousands of dollars, including bets on his own team, and was barred from entering the 2026 supplemental draft, Sorsby and Texas Tech have parted ways after a mighty backlash from other college programs. Sorsby plans to declare for the supplemental draft, which could get the Jets interested.

The Jets' interest in Sorsby may be determined entirely by what they think of Klubnik. With the Jets already trying to decide it would be better to sign a veteran quarterback to be the backup, Klubnik now needs to show that he can be a viable NFL quarterback. If he does, the Jets can kick the franchise quarterback can down the road to 2027 and avoid the Sorsby circus altogether.

Cade Klubnik can dissuade Jets from taking Brendan Sorsby in supplemental draft

Sorsby likely would have been a fringe first-round selection in the 2027 NFL Draft if he never had any of the outside noise. Even though his pocket presence needs some work, his arm is tremendous, and his accuracy deep down the field will create a healthy market for his services.

If the Jets take Sorsby, not only will they add a weird dynamic between him and Smith as the young guy fights for his eventual starting role, but the Klubnik pick will essentially have been worthless. The Jets would have traded multiple picks to move up high in the fourth round to select someone who might not be active on gameday.

Klubnik had some up-and-down practices, as is common for a rookie quarterback, but most of the reviews have been generally positive. The Jets' ideal long-term quarterback room of a 2027 first-round pick under center and Klubnik behind him is still very attainable.

Klubnik performing well and dissuading the Jets from riding the Sorsby roller coaster would be more feathers in Darren Mougey's cap. Past regimes weren't just bad, but they were also loud and operated in a way that set the franchise up for mockery. Sorsby would be more of a Mike Maccagnan or Joe Douglas move than a Mougey decision.
