What does the Will Levis signing mean for Jets' quarterback room?

The New York Jets signed former Tennessee Titans quarterback Will Levis to their practice squad on Tuesday, weeks after hosting him on a visit.

Levis, the former No. 33 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, was released by the Titans as part of final roster cuts in late August. After remaining unsigned throughout the first two weeks of the season, the former Kentucky standout has finally found a new home.

But what does this transaction mean for the Jets' current quarterback room? Is everything okay with Geno Smith? Is Cade Klubnik proving in practice that he's not ready to serve as New York's primary insurance policy behind Smith? Is Bailey Zappe just that bad?

Geno Smith's health called into question after New York Jets sign Will Levis

In the wake of the Levis signing, Jets commentator and host of the Badlands podcast Joe Caporoso speculated that Smith could be a little dinged up after being sacked four times against the Green Bay Packers this past Sunday.

"Not using any roster capital on Zappe is good and probably nothing but improved depth but I wonder if Geno is a touch banged up (not to the point of not playing but enough to have them concerned about not having another veteran on hand)."

Smith didn't have an injury designation coming out of Sunday's loss, and the first practice report won't come out until Wednesday afternoon. It will be interesting to keep an eye out and see if the Jets' veteran quarterback is limited by any ailment.

If he is banged up, the Levis addition makes all the more sense, and he could be essential insurance in a room with a fourth-round rookie quarterback.

Bailey Zappe's New York Jets era comes to an end

It was later revealed that, amid a flurry of Jets practice squad moves, they would be cutting ties with the veteran Zappe, who was with the team throughout the summer.

Zappe was disappointing throughout three separate preseason appearances. He had every chance in the world to outplay Klubnik and secure the Jets' backup quarterback job, but failed to do so with every opportunity he got.

If it hadn't been for Brady Cook getting scooped up and placed on the Miami Dolphins' 53-man roster, it likely would've been the Jets' former undrafted free agent quarterback on the practice squad over Zappe.

Regardless, Levis is an upgrade over both, and at minimum, you can say the Jets improved their quarterback room's depth after Tuesday's signing.
