Dolphins continue hilarious trend of picking up Jets' quarterback castoffs

When it comes to the AFC East, it's hard to ignore the fact that the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins are two of the biggest bottom feeders in the division. Jets fans already know how long their postseason drought is, but they can always take solace in the fact that while they haven't seen a playoff game in 15 years, the Dolphins haven't won one since 2000.

Which is what makes it all the more hilarious that Miami continues to pick up its AFC East rivals' quarterback castoffs. First, it was Jets legend Mike White; then former No. 2 overall pick Zach Wilson made his way to South Beach. Even Tim Boyle, who was horrendous in three starts with the Jets, found a home with the Dolphins at point.

Now, another name can be added to that list as well, as Miami claimed former undrafted free agent quarterback Brady Cook after he failed to make New York's 53-man roster. Jets fans surely remember Cook from his tenure as starting quarterback to end the 2025 season.

Miami needed quarterback depth; that's for sure. They dealt 2025 draft pick Quinn Ewers just before the roster cutdown deadline on Sunday. But Cook? Were his preseason outings that impressive as to earn a spot on the Dolphins' 53-man roster?

Dolphins hilariously claim former New York Jets quarterback Brady Cook off waivers

It's not far-fetched to say Cook barely looked like an NFL-caliber player at the end of the 2025 season. After Justin Fields' benching and Tyrod Taylor's season-ending injury, the former Missouri standout was handed the keys to the Jets offense. It went about as you would expect.

Cook went 0-4 in his starts and, in five total appearances, completed 57.5% of his passes for 739 yards, two touchdowns, and seven interceptions. The Jets were routinely blown out in each of his games.

To his credit, Cook seemed to make progress this summer. His play throughout the preseason routinely surpassed that of Bailey Zappe, who was the Jets' first cut on Saturday evening. He completed 13 of 23 passing attempts for 165 yards, along with one touchdown and no interceptions.

New York may have been interested in bringing him back on their practice squad, had it not been for the Dolphins claiming him on waivers. After all, they invested quite a bit of development in him over the past year.

Instead, he'll head to Miami and join the long line of Jets quarterbacks who have found a second home with the Dolphins. We'll see if he can beat out Kyle McCord for the backup job behind Malik Willis.
