Jets' Will Levis signing fulfills months of fans' offseason dreams

The New York Jets have made an addition to their quarterback room following a close loss to the Green Bay Packers, signing former Tennessee Titans quarterback Will Levis following a fairly quick and unceremonious exit from his old franchise, per Netflix's Tom Pelissero.

Levis has officially been signed to the Jets' practice squad after he was released by the Tennessee Titans. Levis, who worked out with the Jets before the team's dominant Week 1 win against his former team, is replacing Bailey Zappe, who will be released from the practice squad after underwhelming in the preseason.

Fans who wanted Levis to come to town in the offseason, which was a time of hand-wringing over the decision to give Cade Klubnik the QB2 job, will likely be thrilled with Levis restarting his career in New York.

Even though Geno Smith is entrenched as the starter and Klubnik is the backup, there is no such thing as having too many quarterbacks who can make plays at an NFL level. Levis has the arm talent to become an NFL starter, and the Jets bringing him to the practice squad makes him a fairly low-risk signing.

This signing is likely not an indictment of the current quarterback room. Smith has performed fairly well throughout his first two starts (one of which he won), and Klubnik was impressive enough to dissuade the Jets from making a more bombastic addition to the quarterback room. However, Levis is a nice developmental dart throw.

Picked in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft after months of first-round speculation, but he never got off the ground in Tennessee. Part of his struggles were his own fault, as his own accuracy issues deep down the field and penchant for comical turnovers helped sour fans on his potential as a starter. A shoulder injury didn't help things either.

However, Levis was stuck with an ill-equipped head coach in Brian Callahan and never managed to get a solid offensive line. Levis seems like a perfect candidate for a fresh start, especially for a Jets team that has taken some steps forward on offense.

Will Levis could turn his career around with the New York Jets

This signing likely doesn't impact Smith at all. Klubnik will likely be the QB2 for the remainder of the season, but Levis will certainly light a fire under his rear end. While Zappe and Brady Cook weren't genuine challengers, Levis has a very strong arm, even by NFL standards. That trait, which is superior to Klubnik's arm talent, could be enough to force some tough conversations.

If the Jets can help Levis cut down on the turnovers and still use his arm as effectively as he did during his best days in Tennessee, there's a good chance that he can put his lousy end to his Titans time in the past. The Jets may come out of the next few weeks with three quarterbacks capable of starting and winning NFL games.
