In the latest episode of The Jet Press Podcast, Justin Fried and Mike Luciano discuss Woody Johnson's latest comments about Justin Fields, if the New York Jets should start Brady Cook at quarterback, and preview the team's upcoming Week 8 game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
The show opened with an in-depth conversation about Woody Johnson's recent comments torching his team's quarterback, Justin Fields. Johnson essentially blamed Fields for all the current issues with the Jets when speaking to reporters at the NFL league meetings on Tuesday.
In doing so, Johnson indirectly put his head coach in an unenviable position and handcuffed the team moving forward. Justin and Mike discussed his comments, potential ramifications, and how this might impact the Jets' quarterback position.
A conversation about Aaron Glenn and how much blame the Jets' coaching staff deserves for the team's 0-7 start was also had soon after. Justin was a bit more critical of Glenn and the staff than Mike, who believes the quarterback play has significantly hindered what they could do to this point.
That then shifted into a discussion about the Jets' current quarterback situation, namely who the team should start on Sunday. Both Justin and Mike agreed that Tyrod Taylor should be the starting QB when the Jets take on the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 8, but he's not the only name in the mix.
Many Jets fans have already begun calling for undrafted rookie Brady Cook to make an appearance. We broke down why that probably isn't going to happen anytime soon (barring injury), while also understanding the fan sentiment behind the rally cries. It makes sense.
Finally, Justin and Mike previewed Sunday’s matchup with the Bengals, featuring a few timely stats from the Gang Green Stat Machine. Brandon Stephens has played extremely well in recent weeks, and Sauce Gardner has once again emerged as one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL.
The Jets will need Stephens to be at his best on Sunday, especially with Gardner likely to miss the game due to a concussion. Luckily enough, Stephens was actually known as the "Ja'Marr Chase stopper" during his time in Baltimore. He weirdly has Chase's number.
It will be on Stephens and rookie Azareye'h Thomas to stop the high-powered duo of Chase and Tee Higgins on Sunday. Can the Jets finally win their first game of the season? This is a winnable game, and Justin and Mike broke down the path to victory.
