Woody Johnson just ended the Justin Fields era with one public evisceration

I don't think Fields is starting on Sunday.

It sounds like the Justin Fields era in New York may officially be over, at least if Jets owner Woody Johnson has any say in the matter.

Johnson made his frustrations clear when addressing reporters at the NFL meetings in New York on Monday. Johnson voiced confidence in head coach Aaron Glenn but seemed to direct blame toward Fields for the team’s 0-7 start.

The Jets' owner threw his quarterback under the bus, insisting that his team "can't complete a pass" before saying it's hard to win games "when you have a quarterback with the rating that we’ve got.”

Johnson made it clear that he still has full faith in the Jets' coaching staff, going as far as to say that he hugs Glenn and tells him he believes in him weekly. The issue, according to Johnson, is the quarterback play. The issue is Justin Fields.

Woody Johnson believes Justin Fields is the problem with the New York Jets

It's hard to argue that Johnson doesn't have a point. Fields has been unplayably bad in each of the team's last two games and essentially the sole reason for both losses. The entire offense has struggled in 2025 due in large part to the quarterback play.

The Jets haven't scored a first-half touchdown since Week 1. Nearly all of Justin Fields' production since then has come with the team trailing by multiple scores in the fourth quarter. In fact, Fields hasn’t surpassed 100 net passing yards entering the fourth quarter of any game since that season opener against Pittsburgh.

The Jets coaching staff finally pulled the plug on Fields at halftime of the team's 13-6 loss to the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, inserting Tyrod Taylor into the game for the second half. While the results weren't much better, the offense was at least able to function a little.

With Fields under center, the Jets have not been able to run an actual offense for the majority of this season. Glenn has remained steadfast in his support for Fields and has yet to name a starter for Week 8, but the writing seems to be on the wall.

Fields has lost the support of the locker room and clearly his team's owner. Glenn and the coaching staff are the final domino to fall.

Johnson praised the Jets’ defense and special teams for their recent performances, but made it abundantly clear where he believes the problem lies: the quarterback.

The Jets’ owner has largely refrained from overstepping, allowing Glenn and the new regime to handle business in Florham Park. He emphasized that the quarterback decision would be “completely up to the coach."

However, it would be extremely difficult for the Jets to justify returning to Fields after his recent performances and Johnson’s loud, public evisceration of his team's quarterback.

The Justin Fields era might as well be officially over in New York. Woody Johnson just put the final nail in the proverbial coffin.
