There was a lot of heat on Robert Saleh heading into Thursday night's home opener against the New England Patriots. Despite coming off his first victory of the season, Saleh's defense struggled to contain the Tennessee Titans the way you would hope.
Both Jets' units looked incredibly sloppy all game, and with no Jermaine Johnson and C.J. Mosley, things looked rough for his defense going into this Week 3 matchup.
But the Jets came to play for him. The defense looked completely dominant, stifling the Patriots' highly touted rushing attack and making quarterback Jacoby Brissett's life miserable.
Though he isn't the one calling the plays on offense, Saleh is still the head honcho in charge of the whole show, and he made sure his offense was ready to go.
Robert Saleh needed this win as much as the NY Jets did
All of this, on an insanely quick turnaround, as the Jets were in the middle of a slug-fest in Nashville just four days prior. In fact, this was their third game in 10 days to open up the season (thanks Roger Goodell).
No matter what caliber of team you are playing, it's hard to get your team prepared for an NFL game in that time frame. It's why Thursday Night Football is always so unpredictable. Saleh having the Jets looking better than they have in all four seasons that he has been in New York in these circumstances is impressive.
It wasn't all pretty. There were still some penalties to be dealt with, there were moments where Aaron Rodgers and Garrett Wilson didn't appear to be fully in sync, and the Jets' lost offensive tackle Morgan Moses to an injury at the end of the third quarter.
Haason Reddick is still holding out, Jermaine Johnson is still out for the year, C.J. Mosley's health is still slightly uncertain, and now Moses's health will also be an issue. Let's not act as if a Week 3 win over a bad Patriots team means all is perfect in Jets land.
But for now, Robert Saleh is no longer firmly on the hot seat. That doesn't mean he may not end up back on that seat. There are still 14 games left and plenty of time for things to go bad. But this was the exact kind of win that Saleh badly needed
Despite his interesting interaction with Aaron Rodgers which had social media buzzing, Saleh was the big winner of Week 3.
