NY Jets Super Bowl odds shoot up following Nathaniel Hackett hire
By Justin Fried
The NY Jets' decision to hire Nathaniel Hackett as the team's new offensive coordinator has been met with, let's just call it skepticism, by many. However, while many have critiqued the hire, it seems as though oddsmakers are on board with the move.
The Jets' odds of winning Super Bowl LVIII in 2024 rose from +4000 to +3000 following the hiring of Hackett, according to DraftKings. New York now has the eight-best odds in the entire NFL to win the Super Bowl next season.
That's ahead of teams like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Minnesota Vikings, Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, and New York Giants.
The only teams with better odds at the time of writing are the Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills, San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia Eagles, Cincinnati Bengals, Dallas Cowboys, and Los Angeles Chargers. That's some impressive company to be included with.
How does Nathaniel Hackett improve the NY Jets' Super Bowl odds?
Now, Hackett himself is probably not the reason the Jets' Super Bowl odds have risen as dramatically as they have. It's important — and rather obvious — to read between the lines in this situation.
Vegas believes that the Hackett hire makes it more likely for the Jets to acquire Aaron Rodgers, and, in turn, for Rodgers to lead the team to a Super Bowl title. That's the clear takeaway here.
Rodgers' history with Hackett has been well documented to this point, and it's the reason many have speculated the Denver Broncos hired him in the first place last offseason.
Of course, Rodgers would ultimately return to Green Bay for the 2022 season, forcing Denver to pivot to Russell Wilson. Hackett didn't even make it through the season as Wilson played the worst football of his career.
But things feel different this time around. It seems more likely than ever that Rodgers is traded, and the Jets are the obvious landing spot. It seems as though the oddsmakers agree with this notion.
The Jets need to make a decision on their quarterback plans rather quickly, especially with Derek Carr's deadline quickly approaching in a little over two weeks. If the Jets wait until after Feb. 15 to make a move, they'll likely miss out on Carr and back themselves into a bit of a corner.
A QB decision is likely coming soon, and the Hackett hire sure suggests that Rodgers has become the team's top target. At least, that seems to be the opinion of the Vegas oddsmakers.
