The NY Jets may have missed out on Tyreek Hill, but could another golden opportunity to add a star wide receiver be on the horizon? That seems to be the opinion shared by some in regard to Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf.
Jack Settleman of Snapback Sports reported last week that the Seahawks were "listening to offers" for Metcalf and that both the Kansas City Chiefs and Green Bay Packers had inquired about his availability.
While Settleman indicated that nothing was imminent, it seems clear that the Seahawks are at least willing to listen to offers for their star wide receiver.
With Metcalf seemingly available, the Jets should pick up the phone immediately (if they haven't already) and start calling the Seahawks about a potential trade.
The NY Jets must inquire about a DK Metcalf trade
Rumors that Metcalf could be traded have dated back to the Seahawks' decision to trade Russell Wilson. While those rumors have been little more than speculation to this point, it's clear that other teams are speculating the same thing.
It's certainly notable that multiple teams are calling the Seahawks about his availability. And it's even more notable that the Seahawks are willing to listen.
A second-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, Metcalf has put together three excellent campaigns to begin his NFL career with at least 900 receiving yards in all three seasons.
Not only that, but Metcalf has proven to be a dominant red-zone threat with 29 touchdowns in three seasons including 12 this past year. At just 24-years-old, he's everything the Jets are looking for at the wide receiver position and more.
So why would Seattle trade him then? The wide receiver market has exploded in recent weeks with the likes of Davante Adams and Tyreek Hill receiving record-setting contracts.
Metcalf is due for an extension this offseason, and if those extension talks sour, the Seahawks might just have to trade him away to recoup assets, much like Kansas City did with Hill.
Settleman isn't the only one to lean into these trade rumors either. Former NFL quarterback and current Seahawks insider Jake Heaps recently predicted that Metcalf would be traded before the NFL Draft.
The rumblings are starting to pick up. The Jets should be all over this trade market.
This is a team that's been desperate to add a wide receiver this offseason. They were first in line for Calvin Ridley before his suspension, they inquired about Amari Cooper, and they were finalists for Tyreek Hill.
The Jets haven't been secretive about their pursuit of a wide receiver. If DK Metcalf is truly available, expect the Jets to be working the phones.
That, of course, is assuming that Seahawks general manager John Schneider doesn't have Joe Douglas' phone number blocked after their last trade agreement.
