The NY Jets continue to be connected to Davante Adams trade rumors ever since the All-Pro wide receiver requested a trade from the Las Vegas Raiders earlier in the week.

While no trade appears to be imminent at this time, it's seeming more and more likely that a deal could be reached as early as next week. The Jets remain the odds-on favorites to acquire Adams in a trade.

CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones reported on Friday that teams around the NFL believe the Jets will be the team Adams ends up with, but Jones also indicated it's far from a formality. There are still other teams involved.

Nonetheless, if Adams were to be traded to the Jets, the team would be left with a surplus of wide receivers. That could mean a certain member of the roster is ultimately the odd man out. Jones believes it will be Mike Williams.

Would the NY Jets really trade Mike Williams if they acquired Davante Adams?

Jones reports that Williams is "the most likely candidate to be traded from the Jets" in the event they acquire Adams in the near future. This doesn't mean the Jets would include Williams in an Adams trade, but it does suggest they could move him to another team.

Williams signed a one-year, $10 million contract with the Jets this past offseason after he was released by the Los Angeles Chargers. The multi-time 1,000-yard receiver is still ramping up his playing time after recovering from a torn ACL but has looked good in recent weeks.

Williams currently ranks top-five among qualified wide receivers in contested-catch rate and has hauled in eight of his 10 targets for 120 yards. He played a season-high 43 offensive snaps in the Jets' Week 4 loss to the Denver Broncos.

The Jets won't necessarily be forced to trade Williams if they land Adams, at least not for cap purposes. The team has enough cap space to fit Adams' entire 2024 salary, and it's likely the Raiders will eat some money as well.

But the Jets' wide receiver room sure would be crowded if the team acquired Adams. He would join the likes of Williams, Garrett Wilson, and Allen Lazard in one of the most talented receiving corps in the NFL.

That's not even mentioning other notable skill players such as Breece Hall, Braelon Allen, Tyler Conklin, and third-round pick Malachi Corley, who has played just two offensive snaps through four weeks.

Still, it wouldn't make sense for the Jets to simply trade Williams away for scraps, especially given how well he's played in recent weeks. We likely haven't even seen the best of the former Chargers wide receiver as he continues to recover from his torn ACL.

It might be difficult for the Jets to find playing time for all of their playmakers if they added Adams, but this is the NFL we're talking about — injuries and unexpected absences are commonplace. Trading Williams for what would likely be a Day 3 pick at best in a must-win season feels counterproductive.

Regardless, it seems the possibility of trading Williams is at least on the table if the Jets do land Adams. Jets fans will likely have mixed feelings about that reality.
