NY Jets might release Zach Wilson after benching him for Tim Boyle

Zach Wilson may have finally played his last game with the Jets

The Zach Wilson era is finally over — no for real this time. The NY Jets finally made the decision to bench Wilson after the team's humiliating 32-6 loss to the Buffalo Bills in Week 11.

The decision comes following months of offensive ineptitude, of which Wilson was the unfortunate face of. It wasn't all Wilson's fault, but the third-year quarterback struggled mightily this season, and his seemingly permanent benching hardly comes as a surprise.

Wilson was replaced on Sunday by backup Tim Boyle, who now assumes the starting job until further notice. Unlike last season's benchings, this truly feels like the end for Wilson with the Jets.

In fact, he might not even be on the roster for much longer. SNY's Connor Hughes reported on Monday that the Jets outright releasing Wilson "isn't out of the question." Everything is on the table.

Zach Wilson has likely played his final game for the NY Jets

In 10 games this season, Wilson has thrown just six touchdowns and seven interceptions while also fumbling a whopping nine times. The Jets are on pace to finish with the worst third-down offense in NFL history, and Wilson is a large reason for that.

The former No. 2 overall pick was never supposed to be in this position this season. The Jets expected Wilson to serve as the team's primary backup quarterback behind Aaron Rodgers in 2023 — a decision that was always questionable to begin with.

Instead, Rodgers went down with an injury just four plays into the season, and Wilson has been left to lead the offense. The Jets decided against adding a viable backup at the deadline, instead sticking with what they had on their roster.

Evidently, it was a foolish decision.

Wilson will go down as one of the worst quarterbacks not only in Jets history but in modern NFL history. His numbers rank up there with some of the worst players to ever play the position at the NFL level.

Now, releasing Wilson isn't as simple as it sounds. The Jets would be forced to eat a sizable chunk of dead cap to move on from his relatively expensive contract. Still, it's probably in the best interest of both sides to move on.

Wilson needs a fresh start where he can hopefully catch on with another team, although even that seems unlikely. The Jets need other options at the quarterback position. Wilson is and has never been a capable backup quarterback.

The Zach Wilson era has finally come to an end in Florham Park. And thus ends one of the most dreadful periods in franchise history.
