NY Jets should shut down Breece Hall for 2024 after latest knee injury setback
By Justin Fried
The NY Jets officially downgraded star running back Breece Hall to out for Week 14 against the Miami Dolphins on Saturday, marking his first missed game since his rookie season.
Hall has been dealing with a knee injury since his team's Week 11 loss to the Indianapolis Colts. He was able to play the following game in Week 13 after resting up during the Jets' bye week, but it's become increasingly apparent that he's not fully healthy.
Hall fumbled twice in last Sunday's loss to the Seattle Seahawks and played a season-low 62 percent of offensive snaps. He was held out of practice all week with the injury, which is why it should come as no surprise that he will not be playing in today's game.
This might not be the only game Hall misses, either. The former second-round pick is reportedly dealing with a hyperextension/MCL issue in his left knee, the same knee he suffered a torn ACL in back in 2022. The Jets might opt to shut Hall down for the rest of the 2024 season.
Breece Hall may have played his final game for the NY Jets in 2024
At 3-9, the Jets are one loss away from being mathematically eliminated from postseason contention for the 13th consecutive season. It's virtually impossible for the Jets to reach the playoffs at this stage even if the team were to win out.
The Jets don't really have anything to play for over the final five weeks of the season. That's why it would make little sense to risk their star running back re-injuring his surgically repaired knee.
Multiple Jets reporters have suggested that Hall could be set to miss multiple weeks if not the rest of the season. There's a real possibility the Jets decide to shut Hall down for the remainder of 2024.
Hall has rushed for 692 yards and four touchdowns on 4.2 yards per carry in 12 games this season, adding 46 catches for 401 yards and two touchdowns in the air. He ranks 10th among all NFL players in scrimmage yards this year.
The Jets will lean on rookies Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis against the Dolphins and possibly for the rest of the season. Allen showed flashes early in the year but has slowed down following a hot start. Davis saw his first significant playing time in Week 13 and played well, even scoring his first NFL touchdown.
The Jets have an opportunity to rest their star player and get an extended look at two rookies who could be a part of the offense next season. There's no reason to force Hall to play through injury, especially an injury to his surgically repaired knee.
It should be Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis carrying the load for the Jets moving forward. As for Breece Hall, it's likely best for all parties — except fantasy managers — that he focuses on healing up and preparing for a strong 2025 return
*EDIT: ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Sunday morning that the Jets have no plans to shut Hall down for the season at this time*
