NY Jets have reportedly received trade calls about these 3 players
By Justin Fried
The NY Jets find themselves in a peculiar position entering Tuesday's trade deadline. At 3-6, the team's hopes of reaching the postseason have plummeted, even if their Week 9 win over the Houston Texans has temporarily kept optimism alive.
The Jets currently have a 17 percent chance of reaching the playoffs in 2024, per The Athletic's playoff predictor model. Those odds would nosedive with a loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.
Normally that would suggest the organization should look to sell and recoup assets for aging assets, but the Jets have already established themselves as pseudo-buyers as a result of the Davante Adams trade.
The Jets are a team trying to compete despite their longshot odds. Still, that hasn't stopped teams from calling the Jets about the availability of their players. The Athletic's Dianna Russini reported this past weekend that the Jets have received calls about a few players to this point.
Russini notes that the Jets are not expected to trade any of these players, only that teams have inquired about their availability. Here's a quick look at those players.
NY Jets trade rumors
1. Garrett Wilson
This isn't the first we've heard about the Jets receiving trade calls about Garrett Wilson's availability following the addition of Davante Adams last month. It's also not the first we've heard about the Jets' lack of interest.
Wilson is coming off one of his best games of the season in Week 9 in which he finished with nine catches for 90 yards and two touchdowns, both of which were one-handed grabs. The Ohio State product ranks third in the NFL in receiving yards through nine weeks.
The Jets will have to make a decision on Wilson's future as early as this offseason when extension talks can begin. The wide receiver market has exploded, and teams are likely inquiring to see if the Jets would be willing to move Wilson instead of paying him.
As it stands now, the Jets have no interest in trading their young star receiver. Teams are calling — the Jets are hanging up.
2. D.J. Reed
Of the three players on this list, D.J. Reed makes the most sense as a potential trade chip for the Jets. The seven-year veteran is in the final year of his contract and is putting together one of the best seasons of his career to this point.
Reed's 81.6 Pro Football Focus coverage grade ranks fourth among all qualified cornerbacks. Only eight cornerbacks have allowed fewer yards than Reed in 2024. He's been one of the Jets' best players.
Despite this, it still seems unlikely the Jets choose to extend him in the offseason. The team already extended Michael Carter II and will likely do the same with Sauce Gardner in the near future.
Reed turns 28 years old in a few days and it just isn't feasible to commit top money to three different players at the same position. That's why trading him to recoup an asset makes sense, but if the Jets are still trying to compete this season, they're not going to be interested in parting ways with one of their most important defensive players.
3. Davante Adams
The Jets only recently traded for Davante Adams, sending a conditional 2025 third-round pick to the Las Vegas Raiders a few weeks ago. Still, if the team was planning to punt on this season and abandon the Aaron Rodgers era, trading Adams might make some sense.
The Jets restructured Adams' contract in a way that the two sides are not tied to each other beyond 2024. If the Jets want to trade/release Adams in the offseason, they can. If Adams doesn't want to remain in New York, he can refuse a restructure and force the Jets to move him.
That said, the optics of trading Adams — likely for less value — just weeks after acquiring him in one of their most high-profile additions in years would probably be too much for Woody Johnson to stomach.
The Jets aren't trading Davante Adams in the middle of the season. They'll wait and see how the rest of the year shakes out before mutually deciding on his future in a few months.
