Aaron Rodgers saves NY Jets' season with vintage performance amidst fan revolt
By Justin Fried
NY Jets fans were ready to revolt. Chants of "sell the team" rained down from the rafters in MetLife Stadium as the Jets looked well on their way to another primetime embarrassment, this time at the hands of the Houston Texans on Thursday Night Football in Week 9.
The Jets managed just 69 yards of offense in the first quarter. Rookie Malachi Corley appeared to score his first career touchdown, only to drop the ball before crossing the goal line. They scored zero points.
The vibes had never been lower, as it was starting to feel like one of the lowest points in franchise history. But then everything changed. Garrett Wilson hauled in one of the greatest touchdown catches you will ever see.
The Jets tried to self-sabotage with costly penalties, only for the Texans to respond with their own blunders — a missed 27-yard field goal off the foot of Ka'imi Fairbairn serving as the lowlight.
Davante Adams would emerge from the locker room, miraculously escaping a serious injury, only to put the finishing touches on a season-saving win with a vintage touchdown thrown by his longtime teammate, Aaron Rodgers.
NY Jets saved their season and might have flipped the narrative
The Jets snapped their five-game losing streak and kept their playoff hopes on life support for another week. At 3-6, their hopes of reaching the postseason for the first time in 14 years might be low, but tonight's win ensures they're still alive.
The first half of this game felt like every other Jets loss in this abysmal losing streak that dates back over a month. Rodgers finished with his fewest passing yards ever in a half in the first 30 minutes and the Jets continued to find ways to sabotage themselves.
Drops, ill-timed penalties, fumbles, etc. highlighted a disgusting half of football that had Jets ready to protest outside the walls at Florham park. But Rodgers and the Jets tapped into the potential that made them Super Bowl contenders entering the year.
Rodgers completed 15-of-18 passes for 179 yards and three touchdowns in the second half. He finished with a passer rating just shy of 150.0 and did not turn the ball over. It was a vintage Rodgers second-half performance aided by a dominant eight-sack performance from the defense.
This is the team the Jets were supposed to be. Is it too late? Has the damage already been done? That much remains to be seen. But the Jets live to fight another day. The vibes have been restored.
