The NY Jets have spent the last few weeks interviewing seemingly every head coach candidate with a pulse, but as we approach the end of January, the team has set its sights on one coach in particular: Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn.
Glenn is scheduled for an in-person second interview with the Jets today. The former Pro Bowl cornerback is the only known finalist for the position, and if all goes as planned, he may be the only finalist the Jets require.
Glenn reportedly plans to meet with the New Orleans Saints on Wednesday, but that plan depends on the outcome of today's interview. There's a very real chance the Jets will officially hire Glenn by the end of the day.
The team is also scheduled to meet with general manager candidate Lance Newmark today, a familiar face to Glenn. Jets fans will want to stay tuned for updates throughout the day, as news could break at any moment.
Other NY Jets news:
Jets have one GM finalist
Washington Commanders general manager Lance Newmark is also set to interview with the Jets on Tuesday. Much like Glenn, Newmark is the only known finalist for the Jets' general manager search and will be the first — and possibly the last — candidate to interview for a second time.
Newmark spent over 25 years with the Detroit Lions, crossing paths with Glenn, before he joined Adam Peters in Washington last offseason. He's been credited with helping turn around both the Lions and Commanders organizations.
Newmark also interviewed with the only other team currently looking for a general manager, the Las Vegas Raiders. However, his chances of joining Las Vegas diminished significantly following the Ben Johnson news on Monday.
The Jets likely view Glenn and Newmark as a package deal, and with both candidates set to interview on Tuesday, the stage is set for the organization to officially usher in a new era in the very near future.
What does Ben Johnson hire mean for the Jets?
The aforementioned Ben Johnson hire could have significant ramifications on the Jets' head coach and GM searches. Johnson was officially hired as the next Chicago Bears head coach on Monday in a move that is expected to kickstart the coaching carousel.
This hire not only likely accelerates the Jets' pursuit of Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, but it also boosts their chances of landing the general manager they want to pair with Detroit's current DC.
Lance Newmark interviewed with the Raiders on Sunday, but he was a much better fit for the organization if they were planning to pair him with Ben Johnson. With Johnson now heading to the Bears, the Raiders are likely to shift their focus and pursue a different general manager candidate.
That's good news for the Jets who appear to be eyeing a Glenn-Newmark partnership. All eyes in the NFL world will be on Florham Park today.
